The Longhorns return to UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Friday night for the first of three games against West Virginia.
AUSTIN, Texas—Boosted by seven runs in the first three frames, Texas Baseball (32-19) cruised to a 10-3 win over Incarnate Word (20-32) on Tuesday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Incarnate Word opened up the scoring with a solo homer in the first but the Longhorns offense responded immediately in the home half of the inning. Austin Todd and Patrick Mathis hit back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners for Travis Jones, who lifted a sacrifice fly to right to plate Todd and knot the game at 1-1.
In the second, the Longhorns took the lead. Zane Gurwitz singled to start the inning and catcher Michael Cantu launched a 1-1 pitch over the left field wall to put Texas out in front, 3-1, with his fifth long ball of the year.
The Longhorns weren't done scoring in the inning, however, as Bret Boswell drew a one-out walk to keep the inning going. David Hamilton then dropped a bunt single and Jones walked to load up the bases for Kacy Clemens. The senior delivered. Clemens lined the first pitch he saw into right field to plate a pair and push the Longhorns' lead to 5-1 over the Cardinals.
In the third, Texas added two more when, after a Cantu walk, Boswell and Hamilton hit consecutive doubles to push the Longhorns' lead to 7-1.
In the eighth inning, Texas expanded its lead thanks to a two-run homer from Mathis and a Zane Gurwitz sac fly.
Kennedy (8-1) was strong through four innings on the hill for Texas. After allowing that first inning homer, the lefty retired the next seven he faced in order, including a four-pitch third inning. He allowed a pair of baserunners in the fourth, but none would come around to score.
Behind Kennedy, relievers Jon Malmin and Parker Joe Robinson combined to allow a pair of runs to make it 7-3, but Connor Mayes, Blair Henley, Chase Shugart and Beau Ridgeway followed with 4.1 scoreless innings of work to preserve the Texas win.
On the night, five Longhorns—Todd, Mathis, Clemens, Boswell and Hamilton—recorded multiple hits while Boswell reached base safely in all four plate appearances.
The Longhorns return to UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. for the first off three games against West Virginia. The three-game set will be the final regular season contests for either side.
