Papp, No. 6 Women's Golf win Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational
03.14.2018 | Women's Golf
Freshman Kaitlyn Papp has won two of her last three tournaments.
KANE'OHE, O'AHU, Hawaii– Freshman Kaitlyn Papp claimed individual medalist honors for the second time in three tournaments to lead No. 6 Texas Women's Golf to the team title at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational on Wednesday at Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course.
No. 6 Texas recorded a 19-over-par 883 (293-296-294) and boasted the three-best individual 18-hole totals of the event to claim their second team victory of the season, after also winning the Betsy Rawls Invitational in the fall. For the Longhorns, it is their sixth top-five finish in eight tournaments this season. Texas claimed the 13-team event by 24 strokes over second-place and 15th-ranked Oklahoma State, which finished with a 43-over-par 907 (303-300-304). It is the seventh win for Texas in head coach Ryan Murphy's four seasons.
Papp, who earned her second win this spring after earning tri-champion honors at the Northrop Grumman Intercollegiate, turned in a three-under-par 213 (71-74-68). Her final-round 68 was the only sub-70 score in the entire tournament field during the course of the week and the sixth sub-70 round of her young collegiate career. It marked her team-leading 13th round at par or better this season. She joins senior Sophia Schubert as the only other active golfer on the Texas team with two career individual victories.
Papp recorded a field-best 12 birdies on the week and also had 33 pars. She led the tournament field in both par-three scoring (3.00) and par-four scoring (3.90).
Sophomore Emilee Hoffman finished third overall with a five-over-par three-round total of 221 (70-76-75). It marked Hoffman's second top-three finish of the season and her sixth top-25 showing in eight tournaments. Hoffman had 10 birdies on the week – tied for second among the tournament field – and also recorded 32 pars.
Schubert tied for fourth with a seven-over-par 223 (78-72-73). She has finished among the top-10 in all four tournaments in which she has competed this season. Schubert tallied 33 pars and eight birdies over the course of the tournament.
Junior Maddie Luitwieler, competing as an individual, posted the first top-10 individual finish of her collegiate career, placing tied for sixth overall with an eight-over-par 224 (74-75-75). For Luitwieler, who recorded a team-best 37 pars on the week, it was her second consecutive top-15 individual finish after tying for 14th at last week's Wildcat Invitational.
Sophomore Greta Isabella Voelker tied for 14th with a 13-over-par 229 (77-74-78), while freshman Agathe Laisne totaled a 17-over-par 233 (75-80-78).
Texas returns to action March 26-28 when it travels to Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., to compete in March Mayhem at The Farms Country Club. Complete results and recaps of each day of action at March Mayhem will be available at TexasSports.com.
POST-TOURNAMENT QUOTES
Texas Head Coach Ryan Murphy
"I'm really proud of my team this week, obviously. The wind blew really hard each day and we handled it much better than the rest of the field. That doesn't just speak to our skill level, but this team's ability to be patient, smart and tough. Again, I'm very proud of the team's effort."
On freshman Kaitlyn Papp claiming individual medalist honors at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational …
"Pappy is playing at a very high level right now, it's that simple. To start the final round with the lead and go out and expand on that lead is a rare trait. This young woman is as strong mentally as anyone you'll ever come across. I'm just really thrilled for her and obviously very proud."
On sophomore Emilee Hoffman's second-place finish at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational …
"Emilee's finish here is more reflective of who she is as a golfer. She has struggled her past couple outings, so to come out here and finish top-three shows you the competitor that she is. It was a strong finish and something to build on as we approach the latter part of our season."
On senior Sophia Schubert's fourth-place finish in her first tournament of the spring …
"I'm really pleased with Sophia's week. She hasn't competed since November so to start back up with a top-four finish is remarkable really. Parts of her game were really solid and the other parts will come together as she gets more course time. Everything for Sophia right now is a build towards the ANA and our postseason. I expected her to get sharper and sharper as we go."
On junior Maddie Luitwieler's first career top-10 finish …
"I'm super proud of Maddie. She played well in Tucson and followed that up here in Hawaii. She's been working hard and is just starting to see the work pay off. It's very satisfying to watch that."
On sophomore Greta Isabella Voelker and freshman Agathe Laisne …
"Not the week that Greta and Agathe had envisioned for themselves but still respectable for both and they both contributed to this team win. I'm proud of both and fully expect them to bounce back for our next event."
