Baseball completes sweep with 5-4 win over Kansas

The win gives Texas its first 3-0 start in Big 12 Conference play since 2012.
AUSTIN, Texas—Texas Baseball (12-9, 3-0 Big 12) completed its three-game sweep of Kansas (12-7, 0-3) with a 5-4 win on Sunday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. With the win, the Longhorns move to 3-0 in Big 12 Conference action.
Junior Masen Hibbeler had a busy first frame for Texas. After fielding three groundouts in a 1-2-3 first inning, the shortstop took the first pitch he saw over the left field wall for his first career home run, giving Texas a 1-0 lead.
Duke Ellis followed with a walk before Kody Clemens blasted a two-run homer over the right field wall to put the Longhorns out in front 3-0 after one. The long ball was the sixth of the season for Clemens, setting a new career-high after hitting five last season.
Texas tacked on one in the fourth thanks to a Clemens sac fly and one in the fifth off a Tate Shaw RBI single to give the Longhorns a 5-0 advantage after five.
After shutting out the Jayhawks through the first five frames, starter Chase Shugart was touched for a run in the top of the sixth. The right-hander went back out for the seventh, but after allowing the first three to reach, David Pierce called on Josh Sawyer from the bullpen. Sawyer would allow one inherited runner to score on a fielder's choice but he escaped the jam with Texas ahead, 5-3.
In the eighth, the Jayhawks threatened once again. Kansas plated one in the inning thanks to a bases-loaded hit by pitch, but Beau Ridgeway would work out of the inning with Texas in the lead by one.
In the ninth, it was Andy McGuire's turn. With one out, McGuire hit a batter, but followed with a strikeout and a fielder's choice to seal the victory and earn his first career save.
Hibbeler finished with two hits on the day while Clemens drove in three. Shugart went six innings, allowing three runs on five hits for a quality start.
The Longhorns return to action on Tuesday night when they host Sam Houston State for a 6:30 p.m. game at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
