Baseball edges No. 25 Sam Houston State, 3-2, on Tuesday night

The Longhorns used six strong innings from the bullpen to limit the Bearkats offense.
AUSTIN, Texas—Thanks to a strong effort from its bullpen, Texas Baseball edged No. 25 Sam Houston State, 3-2, on Tuesday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Longhorns pitchers struck out 13 Bearkats on the night while Ryan Reynolds and Masen Hibbeler drove in a run each to send Texas to its fourth win in a row.
Sam Houston State (16-5) got on the board first in the game when Texas starter Nico O'Donnell issued a bases-loaded walk to force in a run. O'Donnell got out of the jam, however, limiting the damage.
In the fourth, the Longhorns (13-9) answered back. Austin Todd opened the inning with a double to left-center before Ryan Reynolds doubled down the left field line to plate Todd and tie the ballgame at 1-1. With two outs and a runner on second in the frame, Hibbeler took the first pitch he saw up the middle to plate DJ Petrinsky—who went 3-for-4 on the night—and put Texas out in front, 2-1.
The Longhorns added another run in the fifth thanks to a defensive miscue and led it, 3-1.
Matteo Bocchi (1-0) picked up his first career win, throwing 1.1 scoreless innings. He was relieved by Bryce Elder, who was stellar in his outing. Elder went 3.2 innings on the hill for Texas, allowing a run in the eighth but limiting the Bearkats to just three hits and one walk while striking out four.
In the ninth, usual starter Nolan Kingham (2) entered looking for his second save of the season. The right-hander induced two groundouts and caught the final batter looking to seal the 3-2 win for the Longhorns.
Texas returns to Big 12 Conference play this weekend when it hosts Oklahoma State for three games beginning Friday at 7 p.m.
