Baseball stymied in Thursday night loss at K-State
03.29.2018 | Baseball
The Longhorns managed just two runs on five hits against the Wildcats.
MANHATTAN, Kan.—On a cold Thursday night at Tointon Family Stadium, Texas Baseball dropped the series opener at Kansas State by a 5-2 final.
The Wildcats jumped on starter Blair Henley in the second inning, touching him up for three runs to put the Longhorns in an early hole.
Texas answered back in the top of the third when Tate Shaw singled through the right side to score Austin Todd and make it 3-1.
In the fourth, however, K-State regained their three-run advantage off Henley, spelling the end to his evening. Freshman right-hander Matt Whelan entered in relief and escaped the jam, proceeding to throw 2.2 hitless frames for Texas. He allowed just one base runner on a walk, while striking out two.
The two sides exchanged zeroes in the fifth and sixth innings before Texas plated a run thanks to a Masen Hibbeler sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to 4-2.
That would be all the offense Texas could muster in the ballgame, however, as K-State added one more in the eighth and held on for the 5-2 win.
The teams return to action on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. for game two of the three-game set.
