No. 7 Women's Golf finishes third at Wildcat Invitational

Freshman Kaitlyn Papp records her second consecutive top-five finish.
TUCSON, Ariz. – Freshman Texas golfer Kaitlyn Papp recorded her second consecutive top-five finish Tuesday to help the No. 7 Longhorns to a third-place final result at The Wildcat Invitational, hosted by the University of Arizona at Sewailo Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz. The performance featured four of five golfers in the Texas lineup placing in the event's individual top-15.
The Longhorns totaled a four-under-par three-round total of 860 (282-292-286), which marked the ninth-best 54-hole team total in program history. Top-ranked UCLA took home the tournament title with a 17-under-par 847 (278-284-285), while host Arizona placed second with an eight-under-par 856 (284-288-284). For Texas as a team, it was the fifth top-five finish in seven tournaments so far this season.
"This week was another good showing for us," Texas head coach Ryan Murphy said. "A third place behind No. 1 UCLA and host Arizona is very respectable. And, four of our five players finished inside the top 15, so that is always a good thing. Desert golf is different than golf in Austin. The ball carries farther and it rolls out further, so getting calibrated can take a moment. I was happy with how my team adjusted to those variations this week."
Papp, who led the Longhorns for the second consecutive event, turned in her first collegiate tournament with no rounds over par. Papp fired a six-under-par 210 (69-72-69) to place fourth overall. It marked the second-best 54-hole tournament of her career, behind a 209 at the Schooner Fall Classic. Papp charted a pair of sub-70 rounds on the week, giving her five for her young Texas career. She totaled 14 birdies over the course of the three-round event.
"Individually, Pappy continues to play at a high level and is amongst the best in college golf," Murphy said. "She's worked hard and deserves success. And the fact that she represents herself and our school in a first-class manner makes me especially proud of her."
Sophomore Greta Isabella Voelker (72-71-73) and freshman Agathe Laisne (72-72-72) each finished tied for ninth with even-par totals of 216. Laine's 54-hole total was a collegiate best for her. Laisne recorded her first career top-10 finish, while Voelker had her first top-10 showing of the season.
Junior Maddie Luitwieler charted a career-best three-round total of 218 (69-77-72) and her first career top-15 finish in a 54-hole event, placing tied for 14th at two-over-par. Sophomore Emilee Hoffman tied for 45th overall with a 10-over-par 226 (73-77-76).
"Agathe, Greta and Maddie had strong weeks, as well," Murphy said. "Each of them is trending in a good direction and capable of winning. Lots of positives from each of them this week. Each of them will continue to do great things for us this year as we roll along."
Texas returns to action March 13-14 when it travels to Kailua, Hawaii, to compete in the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational. Complete results and a recap will be available at TexasSports.com.
