The Longhorns fell in an early hole and could not complete the comeback against the Aggies on the road.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas—Despite coming back to within one twice in the ballgame, Texas Baseball (22-13) was edged, 6-5, by No. 22 Texas A&M on Tuesday night at Blue Bell Park.
The Aggies got on the board first with a four-run opening frame. They managed two runs on a pair of hits and a pair of walks off starter Nico O'Donnell (2-2) before he was pulled with one away in the inning. Kamron Fields entered and, after a base hit scored two, got out of the inning with Texas behind 4-0.
The Longhorns bullpen held the Aggies scoreless over the next five frames, however, giving the offense a chance to get back in the ballgame.
In the top of the fifth, Texas finally struck. With one out, Tate Shaw singled and Masen Hibbeler drew a walk to put two on for Kody Clemens, who earlier in the day was named to the Golden Spikes Award midseason watch list. After a pitching change, Clemens drove the 0-1 offering down the left field line for a two-run double to put Texas on the board and make it, 4-2. One batter later, Zach Zubia singled to left field to plate Clemens and pull the Longhorns to within one.
After the Aggies plated a pair off of freshman Bryce Elder, Texas found itself in a 6-3 hole. The Longhorns inched back with a run in the seventh when, after Clemens led off with a single, Zubia walked, and David Hamilton sacrificed them over, Ryan Reynolds singled up the middle to make it a 6-4 ballgame.
After Andy McGuire sat the Aggies down in order in the bottom of the seventh, the Texas offense went back to work in the eighth. With one away, Tate Shaw beat out an infield single. After a fielder's choice put Hibbeler on, Hibbeler stole second with two outs to put himself in scoring position. Clemens once again came through for Texas, driving a single through the right side to score Hibbeler and make it 6-5. Zubia followed with a walk and Hamilton singled to load the bases, but the Longhorns could not score the tying run.
Shaw and Clemens each added three hits in the game while Hamilton had two. Clemens was responsible for driving in three of the five Texas runs and Zubia, who added a hit, an RBI, and walked three times, extended his reached base safely streak to 34 games.
On the mound, Kamron Fields tossed 2.2 scoreless with four strikeouts while Matteo Bocchi and Parker Joe Robinson threw a scoreless inning each before Andy McGuire finished out the game with a pair of shutout frames and three strikeouts.
The Longhorns return to action this weekend with a road series at No. 16 Oklahoma.
