SUGAR LAND, Texas—On Wednesday night in Sugar Land, No. 21 Texas Baseball (26-14) pounded out 11 hits en route to a 10-2 win over Texas Southern (16-22) at Constellation Field, home of the Sugar Land Skeeters.
The Longhorns got the scoring started in the bottom of the first when Tate Shaw was hit with a pitch and came around to score on a throwing error.
After the sides exchanged zeroes in the second and third, Texas plated a pair of runs in the fourth with a couple of two-out knocks. Ryan Reynolds stroked a two-out double before Duke Ellis, who finished 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored, tripled him home to make it 2-0 in favor of the Longhorns. Ellis then came around to score on a wild pitch to make it 3-0 after four complete.
In the fifth, Texas continued to tack on. Masen Hibbeler and Kody Clemens opened the inning with back-to-back singles and with one out, David Hamilton lifted a sac fly to center to push the Texas lead to 4-0. With two outs in the inning, left fielder Andy McGuire blasted his second career home run over the left field wall to put Texas out in front, 6-0, after five.
The Tigers plated two in the top of the sixth but a Shaw sacrifice fly got one back to make it 7-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, David Hamilton, who stole his 22nd and 23rd bases of the season in the game, dropped a bunt single before a McGuire walk put runners on the corners. Hamilton then scored on a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt to push it to 8-2. After an Ellis walk and the first career hit for George Pappas, a wild pitch stretched the lead to 9-2. With the bases loaded, Clemens drew a walk to force in a run to close out the scoring at 10-2.
On the mound for Texas, Kamron Fields tossed two scoreless frames before Nico O'Donnell (3-2) added two of his own. After a scoreless inning each from Josh Sawyer and Matthew Whelan, McGuire finished things off on the mound with a hitless ninth.
Michael McCann finished with a career-high-tying three hits on the night while Zach Zubia extended his reached base safely streak to 39 games with a walk. The triple was the first of Ellis' career.
The Longhorns return to action on Friday night at 7 p.m. with the first of three games against visiting New Orleans.
