AUSTIN, Texas—Tied 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth, second baseman Kody Clemens launched a two-out two-run homer to send No. 17 Texas Baseball to a 5-3 walk-off win over TCU on Friday night in front of 6,779 at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Texas fell behind 3-0 in the first inning, but that would be all the damage allowed by Longhorns pitching in the ballgame.
Chase Shugart finished with five innings of work, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits, three walks, and five strikeouts. Behind Shugart, A combination of Josh Sawyer, Parker Joe Robinson, and Andy McGuire (1-2)—all three of whom graduated earlier in the day—kept the Horned Frogs off the board to allow for a Texas comeback.
In the fourth, Clemens got the offense going with a leadoff double. He moved to third on a Zach Zubia single before Masen Hibbeler singled him home to make it a 3-1 ballgame.
The next inning, after Duke Ellis ripped a one-out triple, Clemens launched a two-run homer over the right field fence to tie the game at 3-3.
The sides exchanged zeroes over the next three frames before the drama unfolded in the ninth.
With two outs, Ellis beat out an infield single to extend the inning and bring Clemens to the plate once again. Down to his final strike, the junior blasted the 1-2 offering from Augie Mihlbauer (1-1) over the wall to give Texas the 5-3 win. The home run was Clemens' 18th of the year, giving him the most in a single season for a Longhorn since Kyle Russell hit 19 in 2008. It was also the second walk-off blast of his career, with the other coming in the 2016 Big 12 Tournament in a 2-1 win, also over the Horned Frogs.
Clemens finished 3-for-5 with a double, two homers, and four RBI on the night while McGuire picked up his first win of the season. Ellis had two knows and scored twice while David Hamilton, Zubia, Hibbeler, and Ryan Reynolds each added a hit apiece.
The Longhorns and Horned Frogs return to action on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. with a chance for Texas to win the Big 12 Conference regular season title.
