Box Score
LUBBOCK, Texas—Timely hitting and clutch performances from the bullpen propelled No. 24 Texas Baseball (33-18, 14-7 Big 12) to a 7-5 series-clinching win over No. 9 Texas Tech (35-14, 12-9) on Sunday afternoon at Rip Griffin Park.
Texas Tech plated two in the opening frame, but the Longhorns offense responded right away. In the top of the second, Ryan Reynolds reached on his team-high 13th hit by pitch of the season and Masen Hibbeler doubled to put two in scoring position. After a wild pitch plated Reynolds, Tate Shaw lifted a sac fly to center to tie the game at 2-2.
In the top of the third, Duke Ellis—who finished 2-for-4 with three stolen bases on the day—opened the inning with a base hit. After he swiped second, Zach Zubia singled to right-center to score Ellis and put the Longhorns head, 3-2.
The lead was short-lived however, as a solo homer off Blair Henley in the fourth tied things up once again.
The sides exchanged zeroes in the fifth before the Red Raiders threatened in the sixth. After a leadoff walk and a pair of singles loaded the bases, Parker Joe Robinson (3-0) entered in relief looking to escape the jam. Robinson, who also entered with the bases full on Friday night, allowed just a sac fly and the Longhorns trailed by one, 4-3, after six.
In the top of the seventh, the offense once again came alive. With one out, Kody Clemens blasted his third homer of the series and 16th of the season the opposite way to tie it at 4-4. After David Hamilton hit a two-out double, Zubia launched an opposite field bomb of his own to put Texas back on top, 6-4.
The Longhorns added some insurance in the eighth when with two outs and Masen Hibbeler on second after a walk and a steal, Jake McKenzie drove a single to left-center to make it 7-4 in favor of Texas.
Tech picked up an unearned run in the eighth inning but Josh Sawyer entered with two on and two outs and got a huge strikeout to end the Red Raider threat.
Andy McGuire entered in the ninth inning and locked down his seventh save of the season to give Texas the series victory and hand the Red Raiders their first series loss at home this season.
Texas does not play this week but will return to action on Tuesday night against Texas State before closing out the regular season against TCU beginning Thursday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
