AUSTIN, Texas—Behind a 4-for-5 performance from David Hamilton and a solid start by Matteo Bocchi, No. 17 Texas Baseball (34-18) cruised to a 6-2 win over Texas State (25-26-1) on a weather-delayed Tuesday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The Bobcats struck first in the opening frame with one run thanks to three singles, but the Texas State lead did not last long.
In the bottom half, shortstop David Hamilton led things off with his fifth home run—third against his hometown Bobcats—to tie things up at 1-1.
Duke Ellis followed with a single through the left side before a walk to Kody Clemens put two aboard. After a double play moved Ellis to third, a wild pitch plated the Longhorns' right fielder to put Texas on top, 2-1.
In the second, Ryan Reynolds and Masen Hibbeler opened it up with singles before Tate Shaw drew a walk to load things up for Jake McKenzie. The senior first baseman drove the first pitch he saw to left field to score Reynolds and put Texas up, 3-1.
After a pitching Bobcat pitching change, Hamilton came back to the plate and once again, the sophomore delivered. The San Marcos native singled up the middle to push the Texas lead to 4-1, giving him six RBI in a three at-bat span against the Bobcats dating back to the May 1 contest when he hit a walk-off grand slam.
A double play ball plated another run in the second and Texas led, 5-1, after two.
After allowing three singles in the first inning, Bocchi settled in to retire the next 10 in order. The Italian finished with four innings of work, allowing one run on five hits to go along with five strikeouts before he was removed following a two-hour weather delay in the fourth.
When play resumed, Bryce Elder (6-1) came on in relief and tossed three one-run frames to earn his sixth win of the season.
After the Bobcats got one back in the top of the seventh, Zach Zubia regained Texas' four-run lead with an RBI groundout.
Chase Shugart tossed a perfect eighth inning before Andy McGuire entered and threw a scoreless ninth.
In six career games vs. Texas State, Hamilton is now 11-for-19 (.579) with three homers, nine RBI, six runs scored, six walks, and three stolen bases. Reynolds also collected two hits on the night while Ellis, Clemens, and McKenzie added one apiece.
The Longhorns return to action for their final regular season series beginning on Thursday. Texas hosts TCU in a three-game Big 12 Conference set, concluding on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
