05.09.2018 | Women's Golf
Texas turned in the third-best 54-hole total in program history.
The No. 8 Texas women's golf team carded the third-best 54-hole score in program history and all five golfers placed among the top-25 of the individual standings as the Longhorns finished second overall at the NCAA Austin Regional on Wednesday at the University of Texas Golf Club to advance the team to the NCAA Championship for the third consecutive year.
Texas will make its 27th NCAA Championship appearance in program history. The 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship begins Friday, May 18 at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.
No. 3 Arkansas finished as the 2018 NCAA Austin Regional Champion with an impressive 26-under-par three-round total of 838 (284-271-283). The Longhorns placed second with a 15-under-par 849 (281-285-283). The four additional advancing teams at the NCAA Austin Regional included No. 14 Florida, No. 17 Auburn, Baylor and No. 21 Oklahoma.
The three individuals advancing to the NCAA Championship are Maddie Szeryk (Texas A&M), Leonie Harm (Houston) and Rose Huang (BYU).
Among the tournament field, Texas had the best scoring average on both par-three (2.97, -2) and par-four (3.97, -5) holes. The Longhorns tallied the most pars on the week with 182 and also had 48 birdies, which ranked second among teams.
Senior Sophia Schubert tied for fourth with a four-under-par three-round total of 212 (69-73-70). Schubert has recorded seven top-10 finishes in seven events this season. Her two rounds under par during the course of the week gives her 14 rounds this season at par or better.
Sophomore Emilee Hoffman also tied for fourth with a four-under-par three-round total of 212 (72-69-71). Hoffman's top-five finish was her second consecutive and her fourth of the season. Hoffman has 15 rounds this season at par or better.
Sophomore Greta Isabella Voelker tied for 12th overall with a three-under-par three-round total of 213 (70-72-71). That marked her best 54-hole total of the season and tied for the best three-round total of her collegiate career. Voelker had the best score among all individuals on par-three holes (2.75, -3). Voelker had five birdies in Wednesday's final round, including two sets of back-to-back birdies. She also had one of the tournament's 11 eagles on the week.
Freshman Agathe Laisne recorded the best 54-hole total of her collegiate career with a one-under-par 215 (73-71-71). She led the field with 42 total pars and also recorded seven birdies.
Freshman Kaitlyn Papp finished 23rd with a two-over-par 218 (70-75-73).
POST-ROUND QUOTES
Ryan Murphy, Texas Head Coach (team finished second at NCAA Austin Regional): "Collectively, all five of our players played pretty good. Obviously, two top-fives from Emilee (Hoffman) and Sophia (Schubert.) And then my Europeans Agathe (Laisne) and Greta (Isabella Voelker) played great. Kaitlyn Papp, compared to her standards was a little bit off, but still finished 23rd in the golf tournament. Collectively, I'm really proud of the effort from my team."
(on sophomore Emilee Hoffman): "This is, more than anything, probably a golf striker's golf course and that's Sophia and Emilee. And anytime you have that, they play well. They both played well at our home golf tournament here, they finished first and second. They both finished fourth here this week. It rewards great ball striking and they both are tremendous ball strikers."
Emilee Hoffman, Texas (tied for fourth overall): "That was a great feeling. This is back-to-back weeks where I've had a top-five finish and this was a really great field so it feels really great to get tied for fourth this week. I've been working really, really hard on my putting over the past month or so and I'm starting to see the improvements and its really been helping my game a lot."
(on advancing to the NCAA Championship): "For sure, I'm still working on putting, chipping, and my short game. Karsten Creek can be pretty windy out there, similarly like it is here. I'll be practicing some putt shots, some high shots from downwind and really trying to fine tune everything."
Sophia Schubert, Texas (finished tied for fourth overall): "We had a really great week. Everyone came together and played well this week and that's really hard to do. It was great. We know this course very well and it was playing tough with some pins that we aren't used to. We were able to stay patient and play well as a whole."
(on playing at home at UTGC for the NCAA Regional): "It's really special to play at home, especially being my senior year. This is my last competitive year tournament here at our course. To be able to have everyone come out - friends, family, Texas fans - it was really special to have everyone come out to support us."
Head Coach Shauna Taylor, Arkansas (NCAA Austin Regional team champions): "We came here on a mission. We missed making it to Nationals as a team last year, and this group has done a fantastic job this year. This is just a part of the journey and a part of the process. Now that we've taken care of this one, we will go back and take finals and start preparing for Karsten Creek (NCAA Championships site). This time of the year you are looking for momentum. The last couple of weeks we've created some good, positive momentum moving in the right direction. We'll make sure everyone stays healthy and in a good place, and we'll try to go take care of business at Karsten Creek."
Maria Fassi, Arkansas (individual medalist at -8): "Today I played smarter than the last two days. It's always great to win individually, but I think college golf is about winning with the team. I'm just really thankful that I was able to help the team come out on top. It really shows how well we are playing and how well-prepared we are. It's great moving on to Nationals knowing that we won our region and had four players inside the Top 10. We're in a great place, and it keeps adding momentum moving forward. That's what we need right now."
Maddie Szeryk, Texas A&M (second place in individual standings at -7, advances as an individual to the NCAA Championship): "The conditions were more difficult today. It was a lot windier and some pins were a little tougher. But I tried to stay with it and stay positive. I made par on my last 10 holes, and staying really patient was important. I didn't hit it as well today, so there was a lot of scrambling and figuring out how to make pars. I stayed very solid with my putting over all three rounds, and that was the main key for my success this week. I'm very proud of my performance. I've worked really hard the past couple of years."
