AUSTIN, Texas—With a 3-2 victory over No. 2 seed Indiana on Sunday night, No. 1 seed Texas Baseball is NCAA Super Regional bound for the 10th time in program history. The Longhorns (40-20) went 3-0 in the regional and await the winner of the Oxford Regional which will be decided on Monday.
Texas got things started, plating a run in the top of the second when, after Masen Hibbeler walked and Ryan Reynolds singled, Hibbeler scored on a double play.
Indiana struck with a pair of unearned runs off Blair Henley (6-6) and the Longhorns trailed it, 2-1, after three, but that would be all the Hoosiers would get off the sophomore right-hander, who spun a gem in the biggest game of his career.
The two sides exchanged zeroes in the fourth and fifth frames, but in top of the sixth, designated hitter Zach Zubia launched his 11th home run of the season to tie it at 2-2.
After Henley kept the Hoosiers off the board in the bottom half, David Hamilton hit a one-out single to spark the offense. With two outs, Austin Regional Most Valuable Player Kody Clemens drove a 3-2 pitch to right field for his second double of the ballgame to put Texas on top, 3-2.
Henley, who finished with 7.1 innings, allowing just six hits and no walks while striking out eight, got the first out of the eighth inning before Josh Sawyer and Parker Joe Robinson finished out the frame in relief.
The Hoosiers threatened in the ninth, loading the bases with one out off Andy McGuire.
Right-hander Chase Shugart, who started and got the win on Friday night, entered in relief looking to escape the jam. The junior struck out the next two batters he faced to seal the win and send Texas to Super Regional play.
The Longhorns now await the winner of the Oxford Regional. The win marks the first time David Pierce has advanced beyond the regional as a head coach and is the Longhorns' first Super Regional since 2014.
