Men’s Golf’s Hammer wins Western Amateur

Texas Men’s Golf freshman Cole Hammer becomes the sixth Longhorn to win the event.
NORTHFIELD, Ill. – Texas Men's Golf incoming freshman Cole Hammer won the Western Amateur on Saturday, finishing as the co-champion of the stroke play portion and continuing to conquer the match play championship at Sunset Ridge Country Club.
Hammer becomes the sixth Longhorn to win the Western Amateur Championship for the seventh time in Texas history, and the first since 2014.
In addition, Hammer became the seventh 18-year old to win the championship.
Hammer fired a course-record 10-under 61 in the third round and followed with a fourth-round 67 to tie with Sam Stevens for the stroke play championship.
He defeated Davis Shore in 20 holes in the round of 16 and Spencer Ralston, 1UP in the quarterfinal on Friday.
On Saturday, he defeated Brandon Wu in 20 holes to advance to the final, where he defeated Davis Riley, 1UP to claim the championship.
