CELEBRATING THE 1969 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS
• Texas is paying tribute to its 1969 National Championship team all season long but Saturday will be an extra special opportunity as the squad will be honored during the Kansas game.
• Members of that undefeated, unanimous National Champion, Southwest Conference Champion and Cotton Bowl Champion (defeating No. 6/5 Notre Dame 24-11) team will be recognized on the field at half time this weekend.
• The team will take part in a private reception and tour of the brand-new Frank Denius Family University of Texas Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday as well.
• The 1969 National Championship team is one of four national title-winning teams for the Longhorns, joining 1963, 1970 and 2005.
• In 1969, the college football world celebrated 100 years of competition. ABC executives arranged for Texas and Arkansas to play the final game of the regular season, moving the team's usual October meeting date to the first weekend in December. Just a week prior to the game, Texas vaulted to No. 1 in the polls and Arkansas claimed the No. 2 spot, setting the stage for the 'Game of the Century.'
• President Richard Nixon was on hand to award a plaque symbolic of the National Championship to the winner, as the Longhorns overcame turnovers and a 14-0 deficit to capture the national title with a 15-14 victory.
• Quarterback James Street scrambled for a touchdown, scored a two-point conversion and then hit tight end Randy Peschel on a dramatic 4th-and-3 play late in the game. Donnie Wiggington, the third-string QB and holder, made a great save on a high snap to allow Happy Feller to boot the extra point through the uprights for the winning score with 3:58 remaining. Defensive back Tom Campbell halted Arkansas' final drive with an interception on UT's 21-yard line late in the ballgame.
• Less than a week later, safety Freddie Steinmark underwent surgery for the removal of his leg because of bone cancer, leading to an emotional Cotton Bowl matchup between No. 1 Texas and No. 9 Notre Dame.
• The Longhorns trailed 17-14 midway through the final period before Street drove Texas 76 yards, capped by Billy Dale's one-yard touchdown run. Dale's effort gave UT a 21-17 lead and the 500th win in school history.
• Afterward, head coach Darrell Royal gave the game ball to Steinmark, who became a national symbol of courage as he battled cancer for 18 months before passing away in June 1971.
• Royal was named 'Coach of the Decade' in an ABC-TV poll of sportswriters after winning a pair of national titles. Tackle Bob McKay earned consensus All-America and All-Southwest Conference honors, while linebacker Glen Halsell, wide receiver Cotton Speyrer, running back Steve Worster and offensive tackle Bob Wuensch each earned All-America and All-SWC recognition. Street, tackle Leo Brooks and defensive end Bill Atessis each earned consensus All-SWC honors.
• The 1969 Longhorns were captained by Halsell, Ted Koy and Street.
• Tickets are still available for Saturday's game and start at $55. Tickets can be purchased at TexasSports.com/tickets or by calling Ticket Sales and Services at 512-471-3333 Monday-Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. CT.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
• Texas will meet Kansas for the 19th time in program history on Saturday in Austin. Texas owns a 15-3 record all-time against the Jayhawks, and have won both of the schools' matchups during Tom Herman's first two years as head coach.
• Saturday's will be the series' ninth matchup in Austin, where Texas is 8-0 all-time against KU.
• The first matchup between the schools was contested in 1901, when Kansas defeated UT, 12-0, in Lawrence. The Horns and Jayhawks would meet one more time (1938) before becoming frequent foes once both schools joined the Big 12 Conference prior to the 1996 season.
• Texas owns the largest victory for either school in the all-time series, having posted a 59-0 win at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in 2001.
• The Longhorns have scored an average of 36.6 points per game against the Jayhawks, while allowing only 15.4, in the teams' previous 18 meetings.
A TEXAS WIN WOULD...

• Mark Tom Herman's 44th victory as a head coach and his 22nd at The University of Texas.
• Mark the Longhorns' 10th win in their last 13 Big 12 games since the start of the 2018 conference slate.
