The Longhorns defense came up big with a pair of fourth-down stops to close out the game.
AUSTIN, Texas – Bijan Robinson rushed for a career-high 117 yards to help guide No. 22 Texas (5-2, 4-2) to a 17-13 victory over West Virginia (4-3, 3-3) at Darrell K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Texas defense surrendered 43 rushing yards, equaling the season-low established in the season-opener against UTEP.
KEY STATISTICS
- Texas opened the scoring with a 7-play, 75-yard scoring drive, capped by a Brennan Eagles 7-yard touchdown reception from Sam Ehlinger, to jump to an early 7-0 lead 2:25 into the game.
- West Virginia responded on their opening drive, to even the score 7-7 with a 12-yard touchdown run to close out a 9-play, 75-yard drive.
- Both teams traded punts over the next four drives, before Texas regained the lead with a Cameron Dicker 34-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter to give UT a 10-7 advantage.
- WVU tied the game, 10-10, with a 25-yard field goal on the opening drive of the second half.
- Texas answered with a 65-yard touchdown drive, that culminated with a 33-yard touchdown reception by Jake Smith, giving the Longhorns a 17-10 lead.
- Late in the third quarter, the Mountaineers drove deep into UT territory to the Texas 8-yard line. A sack by DeMarvion Overshown on third-and-goal forced WVU to settle for a 34-yard field goal to cut the Texas lead to 17-13.
- In the fourth quarter, West Virginia moved inside the Texas 20-yard line on their final two possessions, only to have both drives end with fourth-down pass breakups by B.J. Foster and Chris Brown, respectively.
- The defense allowed fewer than 100 yards rushing for the third time this season.
