FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Texas track and field team finished fourth on the men's side and second in the women's team standings at the Wooo Pig Classic on Friday. The Longhorns won five individual events (2 men/3 women) in their first stop at the Randal Tyson Track Center this season.
All-American jumper/hurdler Tara Davis got the day off to a flying start for UT, as she soared past the field en route to a victory in the women's long jump. Davis, the American junior world-record holder in the event, cleared an indoor collegiate-best 6.56m/21-6.25 to pick up her first win of the season. It was the No. 2 mark in the NCAA this year and the fourth-best in the world. Davis' jump also made her the No. 3 performer in UT history, and was tied for the third-best performance overall by a Longhorn in the event.
A former NCAA Indoor hurdles champion, Chanel Brissett began her journey back to the top of the podium, and her first season at Texas, in victorious fashion Friday. She clocked 8.13 to advance to the finals, where she won with an 8.07 that edged out her former USC teammate, Mecca McGlaston, by one-hundredth of a second. Brissett's time tied her with Morgan Snow (Goodwin) for fifth on UT's top performer's list in the event.
All-American sprinter Kynnedy Flannel capped a trio of women's wins for Texas by running away from the field in her signature event, the 200-meter dash. Flannel clocked a 23.09, the No. 2 mark in the NCAA and the world this season, en route to victory. True freshman Kevona Davis finished second behind Flannel, posting a 23.26 in her first race as a Longhorn.
On the men's side, Tripp Piperi produced the highlight performer of the day, as he extended his NCAA lead with a personal-best 21.12m effort in the men's shot put. His throw earned him his second win in as many tries this season. Piperi, the 2019 NCAA Outdoor national champion in the event, joined 2016 Olympic gold medalist Ryan Crouser as the only Longhorns to hit the 21-meter mark indoors in the shot put. It was the seventh-best throw indoors by a Longhorn all-time.
True freshman Graydon Morris, another Longhorn making his indoor debut, was victorious in the 3,000-meter run. Morris clocked an 8:01.30 to pace the field by more than five seconds. His time rocketed him all the way to No. 6 on Texas' all-time performers list, and was the 10th-best performance overall by a Longhorn in the event.
After back-to-back weeks of competition, the Longhorns are scheduled to continue an early season sprint at the Houston Invitational next Friday and Saturday, Jan. 29-30, in Houston, Texas.
