AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Track and Field holds a pair of top-15 rankings in the latest release of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Rating Index. The Texas men moved up four spots to No. 11 this week, while the women sit at No. 5.
On the women's side, Texas has had posted 10 total NCAA top-16 marks in seven different events. First-year Longhorn Chanel Brissett highlights that group with the No. 2 ranking in the 60-meter hurdles this year. Behind her are Kynnedy Flannel (No. 3 – 200m; No. 8 – 60m), Tara Davis (No. 4 – Long Jump), Kevona Davis (No. 5 – 200m), Kennedy Simon (No. 5 – 400m; No. 16 – 200m), Kristine Blazevica (No. 6 – Pentathlon), Julien Alfred (No. 7 – 60m) and the 4x400-meter relay team (No. 10).
The Texas men currently hold eight NCAA top-16 marks in six different events. Two of those – Tripp Piperi (shot put) and Leo Neugebauer (heptathlon) – are the NCAA leaders at this point of the season. Piperi's NCAA shot put lead came after he posted a lifetime-best throw of 21.12m/69-3.5 at the Wooo Pig Classic back on Jan. 22. Neugebauer took the NCAA heptathlon lead this past weekend at the Texas Tech Invitational scoring 5,960 points – his collegiate best and No. 3 in UT history – to win by more than 300 points. Neugebauer is also ranked No. 15 nationally in the long jump currently. Brendan Hebert (No. 8 – Mile), Philip Frank (No. 11 – Heptathlon), Graydon Morris (No. 14 – 3000m), Alex Loving (No. 16 – heptathlon) and the UT 4x400-meter relay team (No. 16) are the remaining Longhorns with top-16 marks to date.
Texas has two more meets scheduled prior to the Big 12 Championships at the end of this month. First, the Longhorns will head to College Station on Saturday, Feb. 6, to compete in the Charlie Thomas Invitational. They will then head back to Fayetteville, Arkansas for the Tyson Invitational on Feb. 12-13.
