No. 11/3 Track and Field preview: Big 12 Indoor Championships

The Longhorns look to win their first trophies of the 2021 season this weekend in Lubbock.
AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 11/3 Texas Track and Field program begins postseason action this week at the Big 12 Indoor Championships, which are being held Friday and Saturday, Feb. 26-27, in Lubbock. Texas' women will be chasing their fourth-straight Big 12 Indoor title, while the men are in pursuit of their first indoor conference crown since 2017.
At least year's conference meet, the UT women set a Big 12 Championship scoring record with 180.33 points en route to winning the program's 23rd all-time indoor conference championships. Overall, the Longhorns have won six of the last seven Big 12 indoor titles on the women's side. The Texas men placed third with 118 points. UT student-athletes won 16 individual events (9 women/7 men) at last year's conference meet, led by a trio of individual titles for Julien Alfred (60m, 200m, 4x400m), Kathryn Gillespie (800m, Mile, DMR) and Brooke Jaworski (600yd, DMR, 4x400m). Alfred and Gillespie shared Big 12 high-point performer honors on the women's side.
Following the conference meet, head coach Edrick Floréal was named the Big 12 Women's Indoor Coach of the Year for the second-straight season, Alfred was named the Big 12 Women's Performer of the Year and Leo Neugebauer was recognized as the Big 12 Men's Outstanding Freshman of the Year. Neugebauer earned the honor after winning the Big 12 heptathlon title with a 5,848-point effort. He is currently the NCAA leader in the heptathlon this season.
The 2021 Big 12 Indoor Championships kickoff on Friday morning with pentathlon and heptathlon action at the Sports Performance Center on the campus of Texas Tech. Big 12 Now on ESPN+ will air live coverage throughout the two-day meet, beginning at 6:30 p.m. CT on Friday, Feb. 26, and at 2 p.m. CT on Saturday. Access to watch the event will also be available through the ESPN App.
