Both the Texas men (No. 9) and women (No. 4) were ranked in the top 10 of the USTFCCCA Rankings on Monday.
AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Track and Field program climbed in both sets of national rankings from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Monday, moving up one spot to No. 4 on the women's side and two spots to No. 9 in the men's rankings. Texas is one of six schools with both its men's and women's programs both currently ranked in the USTFCCCA's top 10.
The UT women have held a spot in the top five throughout the year, and moved back up to No. 4 – switching places with USC for the second-straight week – after a strong showing at the Charlie Thomas Invitational last Saturday. The Longhorns won eight individual events and posted three NCAA top-16 performances. Two of those top-16 marks came in the 60-meter dash with event-winner Julien Alfred (7.15) clocking the nations' second-fastest time, and Kynnedy Flannel (7.23 PR) posting the sixth-fastest mark this season. Texas also ran the 10th-fastest 4x400-meter relay in the country in College Station last weekend.
On the men's side, the Longhorns got five top-16 performances, led by Tripp Piperi extending his NCAA shot put lead with a school-record throw of 21.74m/71-4. His mark was a meet and facility record as well, No. 2 in the world this year and No. 2 in the NCAA all-time. In addition, Yaseen Abdalla (No. 2) and Abraham Avila-Martinez (No. 9) posted qualifying times in the 5000-meter run and Crayton Carrozza clocked the 13th-fastest 800-meter run this year. The Longhorns' 4x400-meter relay squad posted the No. 7 time in the country during the current campaign with a runner-up finish in the event Saturday night.
The Longhorns are scheduled to compete in their final meet of the regular season this weekend when they head back to Fayetteville, Ark. for the Tyson Invitational. The meet takes place on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 12-13, at the Randal Tyson Track Center – home of the 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships.
