In all, 10 different Longhorns managed hits and seven registered RBIs during the run-rule triumph
AUSTIN, Texas – On Sunday afternoon in the Bevo Classic finale at Red & Charline McCombs Field, No. 8/10 Texas softball (24-3) got hits from 10 different Longhorns in rolling past UT Arlington, 9-1 (6 inn.).
Important Notes
- Junior second baseman Janae Jefferson returned to her usual leadoff spot in the line-up following a six-game injury absence to go 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
- Texas has won seven straight games, marking its third winning streak of seven-or-more games so far in 2021.
- With freshman second baseman Alyssa Washington's walk-off single to end the game in six innings, the Longhorns have now registered five walk-off wins this season.
- Junior catcher Mary Iakopo extended her career-long hitting streak to 13 games and her career-best streak of reaching base safely to 15 games.
- Texas posted its 10th run-rule win on Sunday, just five from tying the school record of 15 run-rule wins established by the 2019 Longhorns.
- Texas improved to 21-0 this season when out-hitting its opponent, 16-1 when scoring first and 15-1 when scoring in the first inning.
- With a third-inning double, senior left fielder Kaitlyn Washington boosted her career double total to 47. The Humble, Texas, native needs just one more two-bagger to equal former Texas standout Jodi Reeves' 21-year-old program record (48 from 1997-2000).
Major Players
Iakopo (2-for-3, run, two doubles, three RBIs); Jefferson (2-for-3, two runs); Alyssa Washington (1-for-1, RBI); sophomore shortstop McKenzie Parker (1-for-1, two runs, three walks, RBI); redshirt junior right fielder Taylor Ellsworth (1-for-2, RBI); Kaitlyn Washington (1-for-3, double, RBI)
In the Circle
Graduate transfer Molly Jacobsen improved to 9-2 overall after allowing one earned run on five hits with a walk and three K's over 5.0 innings. Sophomore Shea O'Leary struck out two during one frame of perfect relief.
The Details
Texas' defense flexed its muscle during the top of the first. After a UTA leadoff single, third baseman KJ Murphy hit a sharp bouncer up the middle. Parker ranged over from short, dove fully-extended to corral the ball, and while lying flat on the ground, reached out her glove to touch the second-base bag for the force. UTA designated player Madison Miller then followed by bouncing right back to Jacobsen in the circle to start a 1-6-3 double play.
In her return from a minor leg injury, Jefferson picked right up where she left off for the Horns by chopping a leadoff single up the middle in the bottom of the first. Following a Parker walk and a wild pitch, Iakopo lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score Jefferson from 60 feet away for a 1-0 lead.
UT Arlington battled back to tie things up at 1-1 in the top of the third. Shortstop Emily Evans opened the rally with a leadoff single to center. The Longhorns managed two quick outs, but left fielder Jadyn Erickson blooped a double just past a diving Alyssa Popelka in shallow left center for a RBI to deadlock the contest.
That seemed to ignite Texas as the Longhorns exploded for four runs on three hits in the bottom of the third. A UTA error on a Rhodes bouncer to short kicked things off as Parker followed with a walk and Iakopo with a RBI double to center to make it 2-0. From there, an Ellsworth RBI single to center, a Lauren Burke sac fly and a Kaitlyn Washington bloop double that dropped on the chalk down the left field line boosted the Texas advantage to 5-1.
The Burnt Orange & White added three more runs in the fourth on a Parker RBI single, Iakopo's second RBI double and a Smith RBI groundout to short.
Trailing 8-1, UTA tried to cut into its deficit in the top of the fifth, loading the bases with two down on an Evans two-bagger, a Carreon base knock and an Erickson walk. Jacobsen battled her way out of the jam, however, by inducing a fly out to right to leave three Mavericks stranded.
After leaving the bags packed in the fifth, Texas didn't waste another chance to end things early in the sixth as Alyssa Washington laced a bases-loaded, two-out RBI single to right center to bring about the run-rule.
