AUSTIN, Texas – No. 19 Texas Baseball lost 3-2 to Houston on a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 11th on Saturday at Schroeder Park. The Longhorns (6-5) will go for the series win over the Cougars on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
Freshman Aaron Nixon pitched well in relief, tossing 2 1/3 innings and striking out five batters but he was charged with the loss after allowing the solo homer in the 11th.
Tanner Witt was outstanding out of the bullpen with 2 1/3 scoreless innings and one strikeout. Starter Tristan Stevens pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed just two runs on three hits with four strikeouts.
Trey Faltine had a good day at the plate with two doubles and a runs scored, while Eric Kennedy had three hits, one RBI and one run scored.
Houston scored its first run of the weekend in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of two walks and two singles to go up 1-0. Stevens was able to limit the damage, getting a groundout to leave the bases loaded.
Texas tied the game up 1-1 in the fifth on a clutch two-out RBI single by Austin Todd. The veteran outfielder hit a groundball single to left field to drive in Kennedy, who started the inning with a double.
The Longhorns grabbed a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth, as Kennedy drove in Faltine with a perfectly executed squeeze play. Faltine hit is second double of the game to get on base ahead of Kennedy's RBI bunt single.
After Stevens had retired 12-straight Cougar hitters, a two-out double in the sixth ended his day on the mound. Palmer Wenzel came out of the bullpen and was greeted by an RBI triple to tie the game 2-2.
Witt got into trouble in the seventh with runners on the corners and two outs but the freshman reliever was able to get out of the jam with a pop up. The eighth inning provided more drama as Witt got into a bases loaded jam but used a strikeout to get out of it. Witt finished with 2 1/3 scoreless innings pitched with one strikeout.
Nixon worked around a single base runner in both the ninth and 10th innings to keep the game tied but the one-out homer in the 11th ended the ballgame.
