Douglas Hodo III went 2-for-4 with a home run and scored the game-winning run in the eighth.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 3 Texas Baseball outlasted Nevada, winning 6-5 at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Wednesday night. Texas (27-8) won its tenth consecutive game, the longest winning streak for the program since winning 21-straight games in 2010.
With the score tied 5-5 in the eighth, Douglas Hodo III doubled down the left-field line and moved to third on a deep fly ball to left field by Cam Williams. Two pitches later, Mitchell Daly brought Hodo home with a double to left-center to put the Longhorns on top for good.
Starter Pete Hansen was phenomenal on the hill for Texas, pitching into the eighth and finishing with a career-high seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits, while walking one and striking out two. The left-hander threw first-pitch strikes to 25 of the 28 batters he faced and had only two two-ball counts through seven innings.
Texas got on the board first, bringing home a pair of runs in the second inning on Hodo's second home run of the season. DJ Petrinsky opened the frame with a leadoff single through the box to set up Hodo, who followed with a shot to left field to give the Longhorns an early 2-0 lead.
Nevada (10-15) picked up a run with two outs in the third to make it 2-1 after a batter reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and then came home on a double to left.
The Longhorns added a run in the sixth to extend the lead to 3-1. Zach Zubia led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a ground out to third. With two outs and Petrinsky on first courtesy of a walk, Williams stepped in and ripped a ball down the line in right to bring home Zubia.
In the seventh, Trey Faltine opened the inning with a leadoff walk and Mike Antico followed with a single through the right side. Eric Kennedy then reached on a bunt single to the pitcher to load the bases. Faltine scored on a double-play ball a batter later that advanced Kennedy to third. Ivan Melendez then smashed a double to right to bring home Kennedy and make it 5-1.
Nevada evened things up in the eighth, sending eight batters to the plate and scoring four runs to tie the score, 5-5.
Hodo then provided the spark in the bottom of the eighth, doubling to lead off the inning and scoring the winning run on Mitchell Daly's one-out double.
Aaron Nixon (3-2) picked up the win in relief, while Lucas Gordon earned his first career save with a 1-2-3 ninth.
The Longhorns will be back in action on Friday at 6:30 p.m. with the start of a three-game series against Abilene Christian at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
