No. 3 Baseball beats Incarnate Word, 5-3

Drew Shifflet earned his first career win with 3 2/3 shutout innings out of the bullpen.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 3 Baseball defeated Incarnate Word, 5-3, at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday night. The Longhorns improved to 34-9 on the season and 23-2 at home.
Drew Shifflet was huge out of the bullpen, earning his first career win after throwing 3 2/3 shutouts innings, allowing three base hits, striking out two and surrendering no walks.
Mitchell Daly and Zach Zubia each went 3-for-5 with one double, one RBI and one run scored to lead the offense.
Incarnate Word jumped out to an early lead in the first with a two-run home run to left field to open the scoring.
Texas responded in their half of the first, plating a pair of runs to even the score, 2-2. With one out, Daly and Zubia hit back-to-back singles through the middle, with Daly moving to third and then scoring on a throwing error that allowed Zubia to take second. After a wild pitch advanced Zubia to third, Silas Ardoin drew a two-out walk and Douglas Hodo III singled to left to bring home the tying run.
A fielding error, walk and a base hit allowed the Cardinals to add an unearned run in the second to regain the lead, 3-2.
The Longhorns tied things up at 3-3 in the second when Mike Antico drew a two-out walk then came all the home on a Daly double into the corner in left field.
Texas plated a run in the sixth to take the lead, 4-3. Antico walked to lead off the inning and then stole second, his second stolen base of the game and Big 12-leading 24th of the season. After a groundball moved Antico to third, Zubia brought him home with a base hit to center.
In the seventh, Eric Kennedy reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error. Trey Faltine followed with another bunt single to place runners at the corners with one out. Antico brought home Kennedy with a deep sacrifice fly to center, giving Texas a 5-3 lead.
Lucas Gordon pitched a scoreless 1 2/3 innings with two strikeouts and Tanner Witt pitched a scoreless 1 1/3 innings. Aaron Nixon threw a scoreless ninth to earn his fifth save of the season.
The Longhorns will be back in action at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Friday at 7 p.m. for the start of a three-game series with Texas Tech.
