No. 4 Men’s Golf tied for 24th after opening round at NCAA Championships

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The No. 4 Texas Men's Golf team registered a 14-over-par 294 on Friday afternoon to stand in a tie for 24th place after the opening day of the NCAA Championships at Grayhawk Golf Club. Sophomore Travis Vick fired a two-under-par 68 to pace the Longhorns and is tied for fifth place in the individual standings after the first 18 holes.
Texas Tech tallied a four-under-par 276 and has a two-stroke cushion over Sam Houston at two-under-par 278. Pepperdine is third at one-under-par 279, while Oklahoma State and Oklahoma are tied for fourth at even-par 280.
Purdue's Cole Bradley shot a four-under-par 66 and holds a one-stroke lead over three players in the individual standings. Only 27 individuals in the 156-player field scored below par in Friday's opening round.
The 2021 NCAA Championships continue with stroke play for all 30 teams on Saturday, May 29 and Sunday, May 30. The field will be cut to the top 15 teams following Sunday's third round. The fourth and final round of stroke play is set for Monday, May 31, and the individual NCAA champion will be crowned following the completion of 72 holes of stroke play.
The top eight teams following Monday's final round of stroke play will advance to the NCAA Match Play Championships. Quarterfinals and semifinals will be held on Tuesday, June 1, while the NCAA Championship match is scheduled for Wednesday, June 2.
The Lineup
- Sophomore Travis Vick is tied for fifth in the individual standings at two-under-par 68. Sitting at even-par through his first 13 holes, Vick birdied three of the next four holes (No. 14, par-4; No. 16, par-3; and No. 17, par-4) before finishing with a bogey (No. 18, par-4).
- Sophomore Mason Nome registered a two-over-par 72 and is tied for 55th place. He recorded one birdie (No. 13, par-3) and three bogeys during his opening round.
- Juniors Parker Coody and Cole Hammer each posted a seven-over-par 77, and junior Pierceson Coody added a nine-over-par 79.

Texas is scheduled to play its second round at the NCAA Championships on Saturday, May 29. The Longhorns will again be paired with Clemson and North Carolina, and tee times will begin at 8:32 a.m. Central (6:32 a.m. local) from hole 10.
