05.08.2021 | Softball
Graduate transfer Molly Jacobsen scattered four hits in tossing her first complete game Texas shutout
WACO, Texas – On a hot and humid Saturday afternoon at Getterman Stadium, No. 11/14 Texas softball (37-9, 11-6 Big 12 Conference) got a complete-game shutout from graduate transfer pitcher Molly Jacobsen and RBIs from six different players to secure a series victory over Baylor (27-17, 8-8 Big 12 Conference), 6-0.
Important Notes
- With the win, Texas secured the No. 3-seed for next weekend's Big 12 Conference Championship in Oklahoma City, Okla. The Longhorns will open the event on Friday with pool play games against the No. 2 & No. 5-seeds.
- Junior second baseman Janae Jefferson went 2-for-4 on Saturday at Baylor (has 253 career hits) and now needs just two more hits to break former Longhorns standout Brejae Washington's program career record (254).
- Texas has won five straight games against the Lady Bears dating back to March 27, 2019, while posting four shutouts over that stretch.
- Texas has scored 14 combined runs over the opening two games of the Baylor series. The last time the Longhorns totaled that many runs in consecutive contests against the Lady Bears was April 14 & May 6, 2010 (W, 8-0 in 5 inn. & 6-0).
- Texas improved to 32-1 this season when out-hitting its opponent.
- The Longhorns are 34-2 when scoring at least three runs in a game this season.

In the Circle
Graduate transfer Molly Jacobsen improved to 13-4 overall after tossing a four-hit shutout with a Texas career-high seven strikeouts.
The Details
After leaving two runners stranded in the second, the Longhorns grabbed the lead by batting around in the top of the third.
Jefferson started the outburst off with a one-out bunt single, while senior center fielder Shannon Rhodes followed with a base knock up the middle. Burke stepped up with the chance to hand Texas the lead and did just that by driving a single past short and into left center. With the bags packed on a Mary Iakopo walk, Sullivan lifted a sacrifice fly to right for a 2-0 lead. From there, bases-loaded walks by Parker and Smith boosted the Burnt Orange & White to a 4-0 advantage.
Meanwhile, after allowing a one-out single to Baylor second baseman Emily Hott during the opening frame, Jacobsen settled into the circle, retiring 11 consecutive Lady Bears over a stretch from the first through the fourth innings.
A leadoff single from third baseman Taylor Ellis started off a BU scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fifth. With two aboard after pinch hitter Sydney Collazos' infield hit, Jacobsen got pinch hitter Alyssa Avalos to bounce out harmlessly to first to leave the pair stranded.
Baylor again got two on in the sixth as a result of a Texas fielding error and an Aliyah Binford single. UT's hurler refused to yield the shutout, however, as the Adel, Iowa, native got Ellis to groundout to short to end the threat.
Lady Bear fielding miscues on bouncers by junior right fielder MK Tedder and Smith soon opened the door for valuable Texas insurance in the seventh as Corona and Jefferson followed with consecutive RBI singles to make it 6-0.
From there, Jacobsen finished off the shutout in style on a fly out to center and back-to-back strikeouts.
