How Big 12 Match Play Works: All 10 Big 12 Conference member schools will compete at the 2022 Big 12 Match Play Championship. The tourney will be played over three days, consisting of pool play for two-and-a-half days (five sessions) with a final round played on the afternoon of day three. Match play format will be utilized during all rounds. Each team will consist of six players. Texas is the No. 4 seed for the event. The Longhorns will be in Pool A with No. 1 seed Texas Tech, No. 5 seed K-State, No. 8 seed TCU and No. 9 seed Iowa State (teams were ranked and seeded based on the Big 12 Coaches ranking). During pool play, each team will play four matches. Teams are awarded three points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a loss. At the conclusion of pool play, teams will be ranked 1-5 within their pool based on the amount of points accrued. During the championship round on day three, the match will feature the team with the highest point total from Pool A against the team with the highest point total from Pool B. The third-place match will be between the teams with the second-highest point totals from their respective pools. Each team will participate during the championship afternoon. This marks the fifth year of the event. Texas claimed the team title last year.
Last Time Out: The Longhorns placed fourth at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup (Oct. 10-12) in Juno Beach, Fla. The Longhorns finished in fourth place in the team standings of the stroke-play portion of the event with a 54-hole total of 8-under-par 856 (277-293-286). The top four teams in stroke play advanced to the Match Play portion of the tourney, where the top-two teams faced each other in the championship match and Texas battled No. 3 Stanford in the third-place match. Stanford earned a hard-fought 3-2-0 victory over the Longhorns. Seniors Mason Nome and Travis Vick both posted individual wins in the match against the Cardinal. The seven-team field at the event featured six squads who were ranked in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches poll (Sept. 30).
Defending National Champs: Texas claimed its fourth NCAA team title in program history last year with a dramatic 3-2 victory over tourney host Arizona State in the championship match on June 1 (Scottsdale, Ariz.). The Longhorns have captured NCAA team championships in 1971, 1972, 2012 and 2022.
