No. 19 Men’s Golf concludes day one at Big 12 Match Play Championship

The Longhorns fell to K-State 4-2-0 and trail TCU 3-2 when play was suspended due to darkness on Monday.
HOCKLEY, Texas — The No. 19 Texas Men's Golf team dropped its morning match to Kansas State 4-2 and were trailing 3-2 to TCU in the afternoon session when play was suspended due to darkness on Monday on the opening day of the Big 12 Match Play Championship at Houston Oaks. The Texas-TCU match will resume at 8 a.m. Central on Tuesday with freshman Keaton Vo holding a 1-up lead thru 15 holes in the final individual match against Jacob Skov Olesen.
During Monday's morning session match against K-State, Vo claimed a 2-up win over Cooper Schultz and senior Travis Vick earned a 2&1 victory against Nicklaus Mason. In the afternoon session against TCU, freshman Jacob Sosa posted a 4&2 win over Ethan Dial and freshman Christiaan Maas earned a 5&3 victory against Brandon Massey.
Following the conclusion of the TCU match, the Longhorns will face Iowa State in the Tuesday morning session. Texas will receive a bye in Tuesday's afternoon session and will conclude pool play against Texas Tech on Wednesday morning.
The Big 12 Match Play Championship consists of pool play for two-and-a-half days (five sessions) with a final round played on Wednesday afternoon. Match play format will be utilized during all rounds, and each team will consist of six players.
The Longhorns, seeded No. 4 for the tourney, are in Pool A with No. 1 seed Texas Tech, No. 5 seed K-State, No. 8 seed TCU and No. 9 seed Iowa State. During pool play, each team will play four matches. Teams are awarded three points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a loss. At the conclusion of pool play, teams will be ranked 1-5 within their pool based on the amount of points accrued.
During the championship round on Wednesday, the championship match will feature the team with the highest point total from Pool A against the team with the highest point total from Pool B. The third-place match will be between the teams with the second-highest point totals from their respective pools. Each team will participate during the championship afternoon. This marks the fifth year of the event.
K-State defeats Texas, 4-2-0
- Freshman Keaton Vo claimed a 2-up victory against Cooper Schultz. Starting the match on hole 6, Vo won the 7th hole to take a 1-up lead before Schultz responded by winning the 9th hole to even the match. Vo won holes 10, 11 and 13 to build a 3-up lead, but Schultz answered by winning holes 15 and 16 to trim the margin to 1-up. The two players halved the next six holes, and Vo closed out the match with a win on hole 5.
- Senior Travis Vick posted a 2&1 win over Nicklaus Mason. Starting on hole 7, Mason won the opening hole before Vick claimed a win on hole 9 to even the match. Vick then won holes 12, 14 and 15 to grab a 3-up advantage. After Mason won hole 16, Vick answered by winning holes 17 and 18 to increase his cushion to 4-up. Mason won holes 2 and 4 to trim the margin to 2-up, but Vick halved hole 5 to close out the 2&1 victory.
- Freshman Jacob Sosa dropped a 4&3 decision to Luke O'Neill, and freshman Christiaan Maas fell by a score of 1-up to Will Hopkins. Senior Mason Nome lost 6&4 to Laurenz Schiergen, and sophomore Alejandro Gonzalez fell 3&2 to Tim Tillmanns.
TCU leads Texas, 3-2-0
- Freshman Keaton Vo held a 1-up lead thru 15 holes over Jacob Skov Olesen when play was suspended on Monday due to darkness. Starting on hole 6, the match was tied thru 14 holes before Vo won hole 2 to grab the 1-up advantage. The match will resume at 8 a.m. Central on Tuesday.
- Freshman Jacob Sosa earned a 4&2 victory against Ethan Dial. Starting on hole 5, Berzina won the opening hole and held a 1-up lead until Sosa claimed back-to-back wins on holes 14 and 15 to take a 1-up advantage. Sosa added three-straight wins on holes 18, 1 and 2 to close out the 4&2 victory.
- Freshman Christiaan Maas claimed a 5&3 win over Brandon Massey. After the two players halved the opening 6th hole, Maas claimed wins on holes 7, 9, 10 and 11 to build a 4-up cushion. The two players halved the next eight holes, before Maas closed out the 5&3 victory with a win on hole 2.
- Sophomore Alejandro Gonzalez dropped a 3&2 decision to Chris Berzina, and senior Travis Vick fell by a score of 2&1 to Gustav Frimodt. Senior Mason Nome lost 4&2 to Brent Hamm.
