Former Longhorn birdies the third hole of a sudden-death playoff to claim the title at the WM Phoenix Open.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Former University of Texas star Scottie Scheffler birdied the third hole of a sudden-death playoff against Patrick Cantlay to win the WM Phoenix Open on Sunday at TPC Scottsdale. The victory marked the first PGA TOUR win for Scheffler.
Scheffler is the 17th different former Longhorn to claim a win on the PGA TOUR. Those 17 individuals have now combined to capture 92 all-time PGA TOUR victories.
Scheffler carded a 9-under-par 62 in Saturday's third round to claim a spot in the final group on Sunday. After an even-par 35 on the front nine on Sunday and a birdie-par-bogey start on the back nine, he had five players in front of him on the leaderboard.
Scheffler closed with four birdies in his last six holes to reach 16-under for the tourney (68-71-62-67=268) and force a playoff with Cantlay. Both players made par in the first two holes of the playoff (all playoff holes were played at No. 18). Scheffler hit his approach on the third playoff hole to 26 feet and poured in the putt for birdie. Cantlay missed his birdie opportunity, and Scheffler won his first PGA TOUR victory in his 71st career start.
