Longhorns Claim Two Individual Titles at Big 12 Championships

AMES, Iowa – Texas claimed two Big 12 individual Indoor Championship titles on the first day of competition.
Kristine Blazevica defended her indoor pentathlon title on Friday after winning the competition with 4,308 points. She opened the day with a third-place finish in the 60m hurdles, matching her personal-best time of 8.03 seconds.
The sophomore added a second-place finish in the high jump with a mark of 1.72m (5-7.75). After a third-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 12.47m, she added two event wins in the long jump (6.10m/20-0.25) and the 800m with a time of 2:18.14.
Blazevica scored the first 10 team points for Texas heading into the rest of the competition.
Yaseen Abdalla broke countless records with his 5000m winning time of 13:33.26. The time ranks as a Texas, meet and facility record. Abdalla's time broke the Texas seven-year record set by Craig Lutz at the Husky Classic.
The men scored 39 team points after five scored events, while the women tallied 28 points after six.
Warren Miller scored five points in the men's pole vault after finishing fourth with a mark of 5.17m (16-11.5), while Leo Neugebauer added two with a seventh-place finish at 4.87m (15-11.75). The men's long jump totaled 12 points led by Stacy Brown Jr.'s third-place finish with a jump of 7.58m (24-10.5). Neugebauer scored four more points finishing fifth at 7.55m (24-925), while Jathan Belaire finished seventh at 7.33m (24-0.75).
Phillip Frank and Demetri Whitsett began the competition on the men's side in the heptathlon, finishing fifth and eighth after four events, respectively. The final three events begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, in the 60m hurdles.
Rodger Rivera scored five points in the 5000m with a time of 13:41.42, which ranks as the second-fastest time in program history behind Abdalla. Haftu Knight's time of 13:46.57 ranks as the sixth-fastest time in Texas history and added three points in sixth place.
The final two points scored on the men's side were scored by the DMR who finished seventh with a time of 10:00.69.
Kiana Lowery totaled two points in the weight throw with a mark of 18.94m, a personal-best that moved her into to No. 2 in Texas history. Tyra Gittens competed in her first Big 12 competition in the long jump and finished fifth with her jump of 6.29m (20-7.75).
The women's 5000m totaled four points led by Isabel Hebner's sixth-place finish with a time of 16:39.74, while Alexa Rodriguez's eighth-place finish added one at 16:46.76. The final eight points were recorded by the women's DMR of Alyssa Duhart, Davicia Patterson, Brooke Jaworski and Valery Tobias who ran a time of 11:19.38.
The Longhorns return to action with countless finals and new field events highlighted by Tripp Piperi in the men's shot put.
