No. 1 Baseball survives, 9-8, at Texas State

SAN MARCOS, Texas – No. 1 Texas Baseball held on for a thrilling, 9-8, win over Texas State in front of a record crowd of 3,283 at Bobcat Ballpark on Tuesday night.
The Longhorns (12-1) and Bobcats (10-3) will square off again on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The game went back and forth through the early innings and the Longhorns held on through back half of the game. Aaron Nixon came out of the bullpen into a jam in the eighth and finished the game to record his third save of the season.
Trey Faltine went 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs scored and his third home run of the season. Ivan Melendez was 2-for-4 with four RBI, one run scored and his fourth homer of the season.
Texas jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning after Murphy Stehly doubled and Faltine followed with a two-run homer out to left field.
The Longhorns added another run in the third, with Douglas Hodo III starting the inning with a double, moving to third on a groundout and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Melendez.
Texas State flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs on four hits to take a 6-3 lead. A grand slam by first baseman Daylan Pena was the big blow in the inning.
Texas answered with a six-spot of their own in the fourth inning, batting around and pounding out seven hits to retake the lead, 9-6. Austin Todd and Stehly started it all with a pair of singles before Skyler Messinger sacrificed them into scoring position.
Faltine and Mitchell Daly hit back-to-back RBI singles to cut into the lead and Eric Kennedy tied the game with an RBI single of his own. Melendez launched the Longhorns back into the lead with a three-run homer to left field.
The Bobcats got a run back on a couple of singles in the bottom of the fifth inning to trim the Texas lead to 9-7. Coy Cobb came out of the bullpen and got out of the jam without any more damage done. Cobb was credited with his first win of the season.
Travis Sthele pitched a scoreless sixth inning before getting into some trouble in the seventh. After giving up a run to make the score 9-8, he was able to turn a 1-6-3 double play to get out of the jam.
Luke Harrison got the first two outs of the eighth inning but got into some trouble before Nixon was called upon to get out of it. In the ninth, Nixon loaded the bases on three walks before getting a strikeout to end the game.
