No. 6 Men’s Golf up to seventh after third round at NCAA Championship

Cole Hammer fired a 3-under 67 and the Longhorns posted a team score of 2-under 278 on Sunday.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The No. 6 Texas Men's Golf team posted a 2-under-par 278 on Sunday to climb into seventh place in the team standings following the third round of the NCAA Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club. Senior Cole Hammer paced the Longhorns with a 3-under-par 67 on Sunday and jumped into a tie for 12th place in the individual standings with a 54-hole total of 3-over-par 213 (71-75-67).
The 30-team field at the NCAA Championship was cut to the top 15 teams following the conclusion of Sunday's third round. The Longhorns, who began play on Sunday in a tie for eighth, have registered a three-round score of 20-over-par 860 (291-291-278).
"I'm really proud of our guys today," said head coach John Fields. "They were tough down the stretch. Grayhawk is a heck of a test that is right on the edge in terms of setup. Tomorrow will be no different. We will bring our best with experience and energy."
Oklahoma holds the team lead after the first 54 holes at 1-under-par 839 (287-275-277). Oklahoma State is four strokes off the pace in second at 3-over-par 843 (289-277-277), while Vanderbilt is third at 5-over-par 845 (282-282-281).
Vanderbilt's Gordon Sargent owns the 54-hole individual lead at 4-under-par 206 (70-68-68). He is one stroke in front of Chris Gotterup of Oklahoma at 3-under-par 207 (73-66-68). Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra of Oklahoma State is third at 2-under-par 208 (73-70-65).
Senior Parker Coody fired a 2-under-par 68 on Sunday to climb into a tie for fifth place in the individual standings with a 54-hole total of even-par 210 (72-70-68). Coody is one of only eight individuals in the field of 156 players to record a score of even-par or better through the first three rounds.
The fourth and final round of stroke play at the 2022 NCAA Championship is set for Monday, May 30, and the individual NCAA champion will be crowned following the completion of 72 holes of stroke play. In Monday's fourth round, the Longhorns will be paired with Arkansas and Auburn, and tee times will begin at 1:06 p.m. CT (11:06 a.m. PT) from hole 10. Golf Channel will provide live national television coverage of Monday's final round of stroke play from 4-8 p.m. CT (2-6 p.m. PT).
The top eight teams following Monday's final round of stroke play will advance to the NCAA Match Play Championships. Texas enters Monday's round with a nine-stroke advantage over a pair of teams, Auburn and Texas Tech, who share ninth place at 29-over-par 869. Quarterfinals and semifinals will be held on Tuesday, May 31, while the NCAA Championship match is scheduled for Wednesday, June 1.
The Lineup
- Senior Cole Hammer, who started the day in a tie for 42nd, carded a 3-under-par 67 on Sunday and jumped into a tie for 12th place in the individual standings at 3-over-par 213 (71-75-67). He registered five birdies and added an eagle on the par-four 10th hole during his third round. Here's a description from Hammer of his eagle on 10: "I played 4-iron off the tee and hit a pitching wedge from 161 (yards). The ball landed on the top of the slope, hopped, checked and then went in."
- Senior Parker Coody posted a 2-under-par 68 during his third round and is tied for fifth at even-par 210 (72-70-68). He made birdies on holes 1, 2, 4 and 6 and was 4-under through his opening eight holes. After making three bogeys over his next eight holes, Coody carded a birdie on 17 and par on 18 to finish at 2-under.
- Senior Pierceson Coody fired an even-par 70 on Sunday and is tied for 34th at 7-over-par 217 (72-75-70). He recorded three birdies during his third round.
- Junior Travis Vick tallied a 3-over-par 73 during his third round and is tied for 55th at 10-over-par 220 (76-71-73). He carded a pair of birdies on Sunday.
- Junior Mason Nome posted a 4-over-par 74 on Sunday and is tied for 100th at 16-over-par 226 (77-75-74). He registered four birdies, all on the back nine, during his third round.
