AUSTIN, Texas – No. 9 Texas Baseball scored three late runs to win 5-2 over Louisiana Tech in front of a program record crowd at the NCAA Austin Regional on Saturday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Longhorns (44-19) advance to the regional final against either Louisiana Tech or Air Force on Sunday at 7 p.m.
The attendance of 8,502 is the largest crowd to ever see a college baseball game at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, surpassing the postseason crowd of 8,000 against Oklahoma on May 29, 1982.
Tristan Stevens pitched 3 2/3 innings of clutch relief and allowed just one run on four hits to pick up his sixth win of the season. Stevens was called out of the bullpen into a jam in the sixth inning but was able to get a pop up and a strikeout to end the threat and went the rest of the way.
With the game tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the seventh, the Longhorns put together a big three run inning on six-straight hits to grab to take a 4-1 lead. Douglas Hodo III and Eric Kennedy both hit one-out singles to get things started before Melendez followed with a go-ahead RBI single to left-center. Murphy Stehly drove in another run with an RBI single and Skyler Messinger capped off the inning with an RBI double to left.
Melendez finished 2-for-3 with one RBI, while Trey Faltine was 2-for-3 with a double and one run scored.
Lucas Gordon started and pitched 5 1/3 innings, scattering nine hits and allowing just one run. He struck out six batters and issued just one walk.
Dylan Campbell blasted the Longhorns into an early lead with a solo homer in the bottom of the first inning. Louisiana Tech tied the game up 1-1 in the fourth inning after starting the inning with a double, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single.
Following Texas' big three-run inning, the Bulldogs got a run back in the eighth inning to cut the lead to 4-2.
Texas tacked on one more insurance run in the bottom of the eighth after Faltine started the inning with a double. Hodo sacrificed him to third base and Mitchell Daly hit a pinch-hit sacrifice fly.
