Piperi crowned NCAA Shot Put champion

The Longhorns advanced five track events to Friday finals.
EUGENE, Ore. – Tripp Piperi was crowned the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field shot put champion for the second time in his career on Wednesday night.
The national title was secured after just one throw for Piperi on Hayward Field. His throw of 21.52m (70-7.25) on his first attempt earned the nine-time All-American his second individual NCAA title of his career after winning his first on his home track in 2018. The throw is also tied with his third-best mark in Texas history and holds four of the top-five throws in Texas history.

Piperi's legacy as a Longhorn goes unmatched after recording both the indoor and outdoor program records, is a two-time NCAA individual champion, was part of the first NCAA team title and is a nine-time Big 12 shot put champion.

Piperi's win also gave Texas 10 team points.
Stacy Brown Jr., also added two points to the team score after finishing seventh in the men's long jump with a mark of 7.81m (25-7.50).
Texas also advanced both relays to Friday's finals, starting with the men's 4x100. Daniel Garland, Willington Wright, Marcellus Moore and Micaiah Harris ran the fourth-fastest time of the day at 38.91. The time ranks as the fifth-fastest time ran by the Longhorns this season. The final is set for 6:02 p.m on Friday.

The Longhorns also advanced the 4x400 relay after Jon Maas, Jonathan Jones, Wright and Brian Herron broke their previous program record set two weeks ago with a time of 3:00.31.The time not only was a season-best, but also the fastest time of the day after winning heat 1. The team will compete on Friday night at 8:21 p.m.

Jones was the first to later qualify for an individual final, running the third-fastest 400m semi time at 44.97. His time now gives him eight of the top-10 times ever ran in Texas history.
Yusuf Bizimana later qualified for the 800m final with his time of 1:47.45. His time in the semifinals was his third-fastest time recorded this season.
Harris was the final Longhorn to qualify for an individual race after running 20.28 in the 200m dash.
Leo Neugebauer had a record-setting day in the men's decathlon after recording three personal-best marks on day 1. The sophomore began the day with a personal-best time of 10.87 in the 100m dash. He later followed up by winning the long jump with a mark of 7.60m (24-11.25) to move into third-place.
His personal-best throw of 16.00m (52-6) in the shot put not only won the event but shot him up into first place. The German later added his final PB of the day in the high jump with a clearance of 2.07m and maintained an eight-point lead heading into the 400m.
He finished with a time of 48.91 just off his best time, and ended day 1 with a PB score of 4,435 points in third.
