No. 11 Men’s Golf concludes play at Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational

FORT WORTH, Texas — The No. 11 Texas Men's Golf team posted a final-round score of 7-over-par 287 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for ninth place at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational at Shady Oaks Country Club. Sophomore Christiaan Maas tallied a 1-under-par 69 in the final round to tie for 20th in the individual standings with a 54-hole total of 1-under-par 209 (73-67-69).
The tournament's elite 15-team field featured 14 squads in the preseason Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches poll, including each of the top five ranked teams in the country.
No. 3 Vanderbilt claimed the team title with a three-round score of 16-under-par 824 (271-279-274), just one stroke in front of runner-up No. 1 North Carolina at 15-under-par 825 (276-279-270). No. 2 Arizona State placed third at 13-under-par 827 (272-275-280).
Vanderbilt's Cole Sherwood won the individual title in a playoff after recording a 54-hole score of 7-under-par 203 (66-70-67). Sherwood claimed medalist honors by defeating Christo Lamprecht of Georgia Tech (68-69-66) on the first hole of the playoff. Nate Stember of Oregon (70-68-66) and Vanderbilt's Gordon Sargent (67-69-68) tied for third at 6-under-par 204.
The Longhorns return to action on October 9-11 (Monday-Wednesday) when they compete at the Big 12 Match Play Tournament in Hockley, Texas at the Clubs at Houston Oaks. Pairings for the Big 12 Match Play Tournament will be announced by the conference office at a later date.
The Lineup
- Sophomore Christiaan Maas fired a final-round score of 1-under-par 69 and finished in a tie for 20th place in the individual standings with a 54-hole total of 1-under-par 209 (73-67-69). Sitting at 2-over through his opening five holes on Tuesday, Maas registered birdies on holes 8, 14 and 16 along with 10 pars to close out his 1-under 69.
- Sophomore Jacob Sosa carded a 1-over-par 71 on Tuesday and finished in a tie for 25th at 1-over-par 211 (71-69-71). He tallied a pair of birdies (holes 8 and 9) against three bogeys during his final round.
- Graduate Brian Stark posted a 3-over-par 73 in his final round and tied for 40th in the individual standings at 5-over-par 215 (71-71-73).
- Sophomore Tommy Morrison carded a 4-over-par 74 on Tuesday and tied for 52nd. He registered three birdies during his final round.
- Freshman Jack Gilbert posted a 6-over-par 76 in his final round and tied for 71st.
