No. 11 Men’s Golf finishes as runner-up at Cypress Point Classic

Texas posted a 3-3 tie in championship match against No. 4 Arizona State, but the Sun Devils claimed the title in a tiebreaker determined by most holes won.
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — The No. 11 Texas Men's Golf team registered a 3-3 tie against No. 4 Arizona State on Tuesday in the championship match of the Cypress Point Classic at Cypress Point Club. The Sun Devils earned the title by virtue of a tiebreaker based on most holes won.
During Tuesday's single match against Arizona State, graduate Nathan Petronzio posted a 1-up victory over Connor Williams. Sophomore Christiaan Maas recorded a 3&1 win against Michael Mjaaseth, and graduate Brian Stark added a 1-up victory over Jose Luis Ballester. The Sun Devils won the remaining three matches by scores of 2&1, 4&3 and 4&3 to register five more holes won than the Longhorns.
Texas concluded its fall season with its runner-up finish at the Cypress Point Classic. The Longhorns also won the Big 12 Match Play Tournament (Oct. 9-11) and earned a runner-up finish at the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational (Sept. 15-16).
Texas returns to the course when it opens the spring season at the Amer Ari Invitational on Feb. 8-10 in Waimea, Hawaii.
Texas ties Arizona State, 3-3 (ASU wins tiebreaker based on most holes won)
- Graduate Nathan Petronzio posted a 1-up victory over Connor Williams. Starting on hole 1, Williams won the opening hole but Petronzio rallied to win holes 2, 5, 6 and 8 to build a 3-up lead. Williams won holes 9 and 11 to cut the margin to 1-up, before Petronzio won hole 14 to increase the cushion to 2-up. Williams won hole 16 to trim the deficit to 1-up, and Petronzio halved the final two holes to close out the victory.
- Sophomore Christiaan Mass registered a 3&1 win against Michael Mjaaseth. Mjaaseth held a 1-up lead at the turn, before Maas won holes 10, 11, 13 and 15 to build a 3-up cushion. Mjaaseth won hole 16 but Maas answered with a win on hole 17 to clinch his 3&1 victory.
- Graduate Brian Stark earned a 1-up victory over Jose Luis Ballester. The match was even through 11 holes, before Ballester claimed a win on hole 12 to take a 1-up advantage. The two players halved the following three holes and Ballester retained his 1-up lead through 15 holes. Stark answered by winning holes 16 and 17 before the two players halved the closing 18th hole to seal the 1-up victory by Stark.
- Sophomore Tommy Morrison dropped a 2&1 decision to Ryggs Johnston. Sophomore Jacob Sosa fell by a 4&3 margin to Nicholas Prieto, and sophomore Keaton Vo lost a 4&3 decision to Luke Potter.
