The Longhorns and Tigers were scoreless through eight innings before a late home run gave LSU the win.
AUSTIN, Texas – Lebarron Johnson Jr. pitched five shutout innings but Texas Baseball dropped a tough midweek match-up to No. 1 LSU, 3-0, on Tuesday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The Longhorns (3-5) and Tigers (7-1) were scoreless through eight complete innings before LSU hit a three-run homer in the top of the ninth to win the game.
Johnson made his second career start and was outstanding for five shutout innings. He struck out a career-high nine batters and allowed just three hits. He struck out the side in the fourth inning and retired six of the final seven hitters he faced.
Eric Kennedy helped keep the Tigers off the board in the second inning, throwing out a runner at the plate to end the inning. Kennedy also led the Longhorns offensively, going 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.
Texas had its best opportunity to score in the bottom of the eighth when Kennedy legged out a two-out bunt single and moved to second on an error. After an intentional walk to Dylan Campbell, the Tigers were able to get a fly out by Porter Brown to end the inning.
Charlie Hurley and David Shaw each pitched 2/3 of an inning out of the bullpen. Shaw came into a jam in the sixth and got a strikeout to end the threat.
DJ Burke pitched 1.2 innings in relief and struck out a pair of batters. Burke came into the game with a runner on and one out in the seventh and ended the threat.
LSU finally broke the scoreless deadlock in the top of the ninth with a three-run home run to left field. Chris Stuart started the inning out of the bullpen and issued a pair of walks before striking out one batter. Andre Duplantier II came into the game with two runners on and one out to face Gavin Dugas, who hit the three-run homer.
Texas will head on the road this weekend to face Cal State Fullerton in a three-game series starting Friday at 8 p.m. CT.
