Baseball beats Sam Houston, 7-5

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Baseball opened its 14-game homestand with a 7-5 win over Sam Houston on Tuesday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The Longhorns (5-7) will be right back at the ballpark on Wednesday to face Mercer at 6:30 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Peyton Powell had a career-high three hits and went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Garret Guillemette went 2-for-3 with one run scored and Jack O'Dowd was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Lebarron Johnson Jr. made his third-consecutive midweek start, pitching six innings with just two earned runs allowed. He struck out three batters and picked up his second win of the season.
Charlie Hurley closed out the final three innings and recorded his second save of the season. He allowed just one run on two hits and struck out one batter in his three innings pitched.
Texas took a 1-0 lead on a couple of hits in the bottom of the second. Powell hit a single to left before Jalin Flores was hit by a pitch and O'Dowd drove in the run with an RBI single.
Sam Houston had an immediate answer, taking a 3-0 lead with a three-run homer in the top of the third inning. One of the runs was unearned due to an error in the inning.
The Longhorns got a run back in the bottom of the third inning, with Powell driving in Dylan Campbell with an RBI single to right field to cut the Sam Houston lead to 3-2.
The Bearkats scored another unearned run in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 4-2.
Texas retook the lead, 6-4, with a four-run bottom of the sixth, starting the inning with four-straight singles. Garret Guillemette and Powell both singled before Flores drove in the first run of the inning. O'Dowd loaded the bases with another single and Jared Thomas tied the game with an RBI fielder's choice groundout. Mitchell Daly drove in another run on an RBI groundout and Eric Kennedy capped off the inning with an RBI double.
Sam Houston came right back with a run in the seventh inning off of Charlie Hurley to trim the Texas lead to 6-5 but a double play ended the inning.
Daly launched a solo homer in the eighth to add an insurance run and make the score 7-5.
