No. 11 Men’s Golf in the lead after opening round at OFCC/Fighting Illini Invite

Sosa fires a 4-under 66 and is tied for third in the individual standings.
OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. — The No. 11 Texas Men's Golf team fired a 4-under-par 276 on Friday and holds the lead after the opening round at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational at Olympia Fields Country Club. Sophomore Jacob Sosa posted a 4-under 66 and is tied for third in the individual standings.
The Longhorns received under-par rounds from Sosa, graduate Brian Stark (2-under 68) and sophomore Christiaan Maas (1-under 69) to take a one-shot lead over No. 4 Georgia Tech at 3-under 277. No. 1 North Carolina is in third at 1-over 281. Texas and Georgia Tech were the only teams in the field to record under-par rounds on Friday on the historic North Course at Olympia Fields. The 15-team field features 11 teams in the preseason Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches poll.
Christo Lamprecht of Georgia Tech and Stanford's Karl Vilips each tallied a 5-under-par 65 and are tied for the lead in the individual standings. Sosa is tied for third with Gray Albright of Florida State at 4-under 66. Stark is tied for sixth at 2-under 68, while Maas is tied for 10th at 1-under 69.
The OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational continues with 18 holes on Saturday, Sept. 16 and concludes with a final round on Sunday, Sept. 17. Texas will be paired with Georgia Tech and North Carolina for Saturday's second round, and tee times will begin on hole 1 at 9:30 a.m. Central.
The Lineup
- Sophomore Jacob Sosa posted a 4-under 66 on Friday and is tied for third in the individual standings, just one stroke behind co-leaders Christo Lamprecht of Georgia Tech and Stanford's Karl Vilips. Sosa recorded three-straight birdies on holes 4, 5 and 6 and climbed to 5-under with birdies on holes 11 and 17 before closing with a bogey on 18.
- Graduate Brian Stark carded a 2-under 68 in his opening round and is tied for sixth in the individual standings. Sitting at 1-over through his first 10 holes, Stark recorded birdies on holes 11, 13, 14 and 15 to move to 3-under before closing with a bogey on 18.
- Sophomore Christiaan Maas registered a 1-under 69 on Friday and is tied for 10th in the individual standings. After making the turn at even-par, he tallied birdies on holes 12 and 16 to climb to 2-under before closing with a bogey on 18.
- Sophomores Keaton Vo and Tommy Morrison each carded a round of 3-over 73 on Friday and are tied for 42nd in the individual standings.
