Bizimana breaks NCAA 1000m record

Yusuf Bizimana breaks 37-year Texas record in second weekend of the 2023-24 season.
LOUISVILLE, KY - The Texas Track and Field program shined on the first day of the Rod McCravy Memorial Invite, winning four events, set one NCAA record and recorded numerous UT All-Time performances.
Yusuf Bizimana was the star of the night, breaking a seven-year NCAA record in the 1,000-meter dash. Bizimana's winning time was 2:18.10, besting Brannon Kidder of Penn State's time of 2:18.26 set in 2016. The six-time All-American won by over six seconds in the last event of the night. Bizimana also took down the 37-year old Texas record set by Pablo Squella (2:21.19) in 1986. Sophomore Chris Riley made his Texas debut and finished second with a time of 2:14.73.
Sophomore Jeremiah Nubbe got the winning started after throwing 20.47m (67-2) on his first throw in the men's weight throw. Nubbe was the lone competitor to throw over 20 meters and did so twice. His winning throw also ranks as the 19th-best throw in UT history.
For the women, Kiana Lowery finished fifth with a heave of 18.41m (60-4.75) and added the No. 18 performance in Texas history. Lowery is also the No. 2 performer in Texas history with her throw from 2022 of 18.94m.
Junior Sam Hurley also climbed into the Texas High Jump All-Time performer list to No. 6 after clearing 2.21m (7-3) to win the event. Hurley is now tied with Ivan Wagner and Richard Duncan on the all-time performer list and is the first Longhorn to break the top-10 list since Jamal Wilson in 2011 with his clearance of 2.24m (7-4.25).
Freshman Brennen McHenry finished tied for sixth with a personal-best mark of 2.00m (6-6.75).
On the women's side, Trinity Tomlinson posted a third-place finish in the high jump with a clearance of 1.78m (5-10). Evelyn Lavielle was seventh at 1.74m (5-8.5).
Three Longhorns finished in the top-6 of the men's long jump led by junior Solomon Washington's fourth-place finish at 7.46m (24-5.75). Kelsey Daniel made his Texas debut in fifth at 7.40m (24-3.5) and Jathan Belaire finished sixth at 7.30m (23-11.5)
Back on the track, senior Ziyah Holman debuted for Texas in the 600-meter run and set the meet record with her time of 1:27.63. The time ranks as the No. 12 time in NCAA history. Freshman Lauren Lewis finished second at 1:30.73 and fellow freshman Akala Garrett was fourth a 1:31.27. Imuetiyan Ogbeide made her UT debut and finished eighth in 1:34.42.
Elijah Mosley on the men's side won with his time of 1:18.20 to set the second-fastest time in the event in the NCAA this season.
Kenondra Davis led the Longhorns in the women's 300-meter with her time of 37.82, the fastest collegiate time of the day. Sophomore Dejanea Oakley finished third overall with her time of 38.15. Brian Herron was second on the men's side at 32.86 with Chris Brinkley finishing fourth at 33.51 and Caleb Hulbin in sixth at 33.78.
Senior Marcellus Moore flew down the track in the 60-meter dash with his time of 6.59 – matching the No. 6 performance in UT history - in the prelims to qualify for the semis on Saturday. Moore's time was the fastest time of the day. Nolton Shelvin also qualified for the semis with his time of 6.70q. The women were led by Micayah Holland who finished second at 7.3, Carleta Bernard (7.43) and Ackelia Smith (7.43).
Sophomore Kendrick Smallwood set a personal-best in the 60-meter hurdles with the fastest qualifying time at 7.71 seconds. Friday's time moved Smallwood up to No. 4 on the Texas All-Time performer list and is tied for the No. 10 on the performance list.
Later on the track, Holland finished second in the women's 200-meter with her time of 23.74 just ahead of Bernard in third at 23.93. All-American jumper Smith finished sixth with her time of 24.39.
