Texas sets nine LSU pool records in season opener.
BATON ROUGE, La. – The No. 3 men's swimming and diving team won its season opening meet against No. 23 LSU, 198-102, at the LSU Natatorium on Friday.
Transfer Hubert Kos dominated in his first meet with the Longhorns, winning both the 100 yard back (45.54) and the 200 yard back (1:41.09). Kos led UT to finish with the top-three times in the 200 back after Will Modglin finished second (1:42.46) and Ben Sampson third (1:45.11). Both of Kos' times broke the LSU Natatorium pool records.
Kos added his third and final pool record with a winning time of 45.89 in the 100 fly. Freshman Kyle Peck was second in 47.03.
Rex Maurer also made his UT debut winning both distance free events with pool records, starting with the 1,000 yard and his time of 8:45.26. The time demolished the previous pool record by 15 seconds. David Johnston returned to the collegiate scene finishing second with a time of 8:50.32. Maurer later won the 500 free with his time of 4:14.58, while Johnston added another runner-up finish at 4:18.89.
Nick Harris led the Longhorns in diving sweeping both events to start the season. He won the 1-meter with a score of 390.90 points and the 3-meter with 405.98 points.
Back in the swimming events, Luke Hobson broke the pool record with his winning time of 1:33.92 in the 200 free. Coby Carrozza was the runner-up with his time of 1:35.62.
Texas dominated the 200 breast, taking the top-three finishes led by Will Scholtz's winning time of 1:55.70. The time was another pool record. Sophomore Nate Germonprez was second in 1:56.01, while Brayden Taivassalo was third at 1:56.67.
Germonprez later led the Longhorns to the top-four times in the 200 IM with another pool record time of 1:46.38. Cooper Lucas (1:47.43), Ben Sampson (1:47.46) and Spencer Aurnou-Rhees rounded out the next three finishes.
The Longhorns won the final event of the day after Modglin, Camden Taylor, Maurer and Hobson won the 4x400 free relay with a pool record time of 2:51.37. Hobson posted the fastest split at 42.12.
