AUSTIN, Texas – No. 16 Texas Baseball fought until the very end but came up just short against San Diego, losing 6-5 in 11 innings on Saturday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The Longhorns (1-1) will look to bounce back and win the series over the Toreros on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Jared Thomas and Peyton Powell had big days at the plate from the top of the order. Thomas went 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored, while Powell was 2-for-5 with a three-run homer and four total RBI in the game.
Charlie Hurley started and pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits. He struck out two batters and did not factor in the decision.
Easton Tumis pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief and allowed one run on two hits. He came into a bases-loaded jam in the fourth and got out of it unscathed. Luke Harrison came out of the bullpen to toss two innings of relief, allowing one unearned run with two strikeouts in his first outing since 2022.
Andre Duplantier II pitched a scoreless eighth inning with two strikeouts for his first outing of the season. In all, Texas used eight total pitchers with Ace Whitehead, Gage Boehm, Cole Selvig and Heston Tole getting into the game late.
San Diego scratched out a run in the top of the first with a pair of singles, a walk and an RBI groundout to take a 1-0 lead.
Texas put together a three-run bottom of the third to jump in front of the Toreros, 3-1. Will Gasparino got the inning going with a two-out single before Thomas hit a double to right field. Powell then provided the big knock, launching his first home run of the season out to right field.
San Diego got a run back in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly and then the Toreros tied the game up 3-3 with an unearned run in the top of the seventh.
The Longhorns had chances to score in the eighth and ninth but couldn't scratch out a run to send the game into extra innings.
San Diego hit what looked to be a game-winning two run homer in the top of the 10th before Texas battled right back to tie the game up in the bottom half of the inning. Powell hit an RBI single and Jayden Duplantier, who had come off the bench earlier in the game hit a game-tying sacrifice fly.
The Toreros came right back in 11th inning though to score one more run and win the game.
