Baseball bounces back with 21-11 win over No. 23 Kansas State

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Texas Baseball hammered out 21 runs on 22 hits to beat No. 23 Kansas State, 21-11, and even the series on Friday at Tointon Family Stadium.
The Longhorns (16-11, 5-3), who will have an opportunity to win the series on Saturday at 2 p.m., finished with six doubles and four homers in the game.
The game was back-and forth from the sixth inning on, after K-State erased an 8-3 lead to tie the game 8-8 going to the seventh. The Longhorns scored three in the top of the seventh before the Wildcats tied the game back up in the bottom half. Texas put the game away late though, scoring three in the eighth and seven in the ninth.
Rylan Galvan had a huge day at the plate, going 5-for-6 with three doubles, five RBI and three runs scored. Max Belyeu was also outstanding offensively, finishing 4-for-6 with a double, a homer, five RBI and three runs scored. Jalin Flores did his part as well, going 4-for-5 with a double, a homer, three RBI and five runs scored.
Ace Whitehead started and pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits. Gage Boehm 1 2/3 scoreless in relief late in the game and picked up the win.
Kansas State hit solo home runs in each of the first two innings off of Whitehead to take an early 2-0 lead.
The Longhorns answered in the third with two homers of their own to take a 4-2 lead. After Galvan doubled to start the inning, Jared Thomas hit an opposite field two-run homer to tie the game. Peyton Powell then reached on a dropped third strike and Flores hit the go-ahead two-run homer to left field.
The Wildcats got one of the runs right back in the bottom of the third after getting a leadoff double and a pair of groundouts.
Texas came right back and scored three more in the top of the fourth, including another two-run homer. Porter Brown reached on a fielder's choice and stole second before Galvan hit his second double of the game to drive him in. Dee Kennedy then followed with his second-straight game with a homer to make the score 7-3.
The Longhorns got another run across in the fifth after Flores reached on an infield single moved around the bases and scored on a dropped third strike.
Kansas State battled back in the sixth to score five runs and tie the game up 8-8.
Texas came right back to retake the lead, 11-8, with three runs on three hits and an error in the top of the seventh. Flores started the inning with a double and scored on an RBI single by Max Belyeu. Kimble Schuessler reached on an error and Will Gasparino sacrificed the runners into scoring position. With two outs, Galvan delivered by knocking in two runs with his fourth hit of the game.
Once again the Wildcats put together a big inning in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game up, 11-11, with three runs on four hits and two walks.
The game continued to go back-and-forth in the eighth inning as Texas scored three more runs to retake the lead, 14-11. Thomas singled, stole second base and scored on an RBI single by Flores. Belyeu then followed up by blasting a two-run home run to right field.
Texas finally created some separation in the top of the ninth with a seven-run outburst. Kennedy, Thomas and Powell started the inning with three-straight singles to drive in the first run. After Flores was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Belyeu drove in two more with a double to left field. Jack O'Dowd drove in a run with an RBI groundout and Brown walked to put two more runners on. Galvan then notched his fifth hit of the game, a two-run double down the right field line. Kennedy capped off the inning with his second hit of the frame, a hustle double to drive in Galvan.
Easton Tumis finished off the win by pitching a scoreless ninth inning with three strikeouts.
