No. 7 Men’s Golf tied for 12th after second day at NCAA Championship

CARLSBAD, Calif. — The No. 7 Texas Men's Golf team carded a 13-over-par 301 on Saturday to rest in a tie for 12th place after the second round of the NCAA Championship at Omni La Costa. Sophomore Christiaan Maas posted a 1-under 71 on Saturday and is tied for 15th place in the individual standings after the first 36 holes.
In addition to Maas' performance, the Longhorns also counted scores in Saturday's second round from sophomore Keaton Vo (3-over 75), sophomore Tommy Morrison (4-over 76) and graduate Brian Stark (7-over 79).
Virginia holds the 36-hole lead in the team standings with a two-round total of 1-over-par 577 (290-287). Illinois is second at 4-over-par 580 (293-287), and Vanderbilt is third at 7-over-par 583 (297-286).
Stanford's Karl Vilips owns a five-stroke cushion on the individual leaderboard with a two-round score of 7-under 137 (69-68). Virginia's George Duangmanee (71-71) and Adam Wallin of Ohio State (68-74) are tied for second at 2-under 142. Only six players among the field of 156 individuals have recorded under-par scores through the first two rounds.
The 2024 NCAA Championships continue with stroke play for all 30 teams on Sunday, May 26. In Sunday's third round, the Longhorns will be paired with Florida and Stanford, and tee times will begin at 10:30 a.m. CT (8:30 a.m. PT) from hole 1.
The field will be cut to the top 15 teams following Sunday's third round. The fourth and final round of stroke play is set for Monday, May 27, and the individual NCAA champion will be crowned following the completion of 72 holes of stroke play.
The top eight teams following Monday's final round of stroke play will advance to the NCAA Match Play Championships. Quarterfinals and semifinals will be held on Tuesday, May 28, while the NCAA Championship match is scheduled for Wednesday, May 29.
The Lineup
- Sophomore Christiaan Maas carded a 1-under 71 to pace the Longhorns on Saturday and is tied for 15th place in the individual standings with a 36-hole total of 1-over-par 145 (74-71). Starting on the 10th hole, Maas was 1-over through his first 11 holes before making birdies on holes 3 and 4. He closed his round with five-straight pars to finish at 1-under.
- Sophomore Tommy Morrison recorded a 4-over 76 in the second round and is tied for 54th with a two-round score of 6-over-par 150 (74-76). Morrison tallied three birdies (holes 17, 1 and 2) on Saturday.
- Sophomore Keaton Vo fired a 3-over 75 on Saturday and is tied for 91st with a 36-hole total of 8-over-par 152 (77-75). Vo registered a pair of birdies (holes 11 and 15) in his second round.
- Graduate Brian Stark carded a 7-over 79 in his second round and is tied for 109th with a two-round score of 10-over-par 154 (75-79). Stark made one birdie (hole 8) on Saturday.
- Senior Nathan Petronzio posted a 10-over 82 on Saturday and is tied for 117th with a 36-hole total of 11-over-par 155 (73-82). Petronzio made one birdie (hole 15) in his second round.
