Former Longhorn star will become the first golfer in program history to compete for Team USA in the Olympics.
AUSTIN, Texas — Former University of Texas star Scottie Scheffler has been named to the 2024 United States Olympic Men's Golf team roster, USA Golf announced Tuesday. Scheffler, who is joined by Xander Schauffele, Wyndham Clark and Collin Morikawa on Team USA, will compete in the Paris Olympics from Aug. 1-4 at Le Golf National in Guyancourt, just outside of Paris.
Scheffler will become the third Longhorn men's golfer to compete in the Olympics and the first to represent Team USA. Jhonattan Vegas competed in the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics for Venezuela, while Brandon Stone represented South Africa at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Players were selected based on their position in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). Under Olympic qualifying guidelines, all players ranked among the top 15 in the world gain automatic spots with no more than four players allowed per country. Scheffler is currently No. 1 in the world rankings, followed by Schauffele (third), Clark (fifth) and Morikawa (seventh).
Following the automatic spots in the top-15, players earn spots based on their positions in the world rankings over a two-year period through the recently completed U.S. Open with a maximum of two spots for each country. The men's field at the Paris Olympics will consist of 60 individuals.
