No. 11 Men’s Golf in second following day one at Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational

FORT WORTH, Texas — The No. 11 Texas Men's Golf team carded a 36-hole total of 7-under-par 553 (280-273) on Monday to rest in second place after the opening day of the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational at historic Colonial Country Club. Making his collegiate debut, freshman Daniel Bennett is tied for the individual lead with a two-round total of 6-under 134 (65-69).
No. 8 Oklahoma registered a 9-under 551 (276-275) and holds a two-stroke advantage over the Longhorns in the team standings after the first 36 holes. No. 1 Auburn is third at 4-under 556 (282-274), while No. 16 North Carolina is fourth at 2-under 558 (284-274).
The elite 15-team field features 12 squads in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches poll (Sept. 20), including three of the top four ranked teams in the nation. Only four of the tournament's 15 teams recorded under-par totals following Monday's opening 36 holes.
During Monday morning's first round, the Longhorns counted scores from Bennett (5-under 65), junior Luke Potter (1-under 69), junior Christiaan Maas (3-over 73) and sophomore Jack Gilbert (3-over 73) en route to a team score of even-par 280, good for second place just four strokes behind Oklahoma (4-under 276). Texas then registered the low team round of the afternoon session at 7-under 273 and counted scores from Potter (2-under 68), junior Tommy Morrison (2-under 68), Gilbert (2-under 68) and Bennett (1-under 69).
Bennett and David Ford of North Carolina (69-65) share the individual lead after the first 36 holes at 6-under 134. Auburn teammates Brendan Valdes (69-66) and Billy Davis (68-67) are tied for third at 5-under 135. Potter is tied for fifth at 3-under 137 (69-68), and Gilbert is tied for 17th place at 1-over 141 (73-68). .
The Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Texas will be paired with Oklahoma and Auburn for Tuesday's final round, and tee times will begin at 9:30 a.m. Central off the 1st tee.

- Making his collegiate debut, freshman Daniel Bennett posted a 36-hole total of 6-under 134 (65-69) on Monday and is tied for the individual lead. In his opening round, Bennett registered nine birdies against four bogeys to record a 5-under 65. He returned in the afternoon and tallied three birdies against a pair of bogeys
- Junior Luke Potter carded a two-round score of 3-under 137 (69-68) on Monday and is tied for fifth. Starting on hole 16, Potter posted birdies on his opening (16) and closing (15) holes against just one bogey (13) to record a 1-under 69. He tallied five birdies during his afternoon round of 2-under 68.
- Sophomore Jack Gilbert fired a 36-hole total of 1-over 141 (73-68) on Monday and is tied for 17th. After recording a 3-over 73 in his morning round, Gilbert tallied a clean sheet with a pair of birdies (holes 6 and 15) and 16 pars to post a 2-under 68 in his second round.
- Junior Tommy Morrison carded a two-round score of 2-over 142 (74-68) on Monday and is tied for 19th. After posting a 4-over 74 in his morning round, Morrison registered five birdies against three bogeys to record a 2-under 68 in his second round.
- Junior Christiaan Maas registered a 36-hole total of 3-over 143 (73-70) on Monday and is tied for 24th. Starting on hole 15, Maas was 2-over through his opening 14 holes during his afternoon round before making back-to-back birdies on holes 11 and 12 to finish with an even-par 70.
