Four Longhorns combine for two-hit shutout against nation’s top offense.

AUSTIN, Texas — The 15^th-ranked University of Texas baseball team tossed its first nine-inning shutout of the year, beating Incarnate Word, 6-0, on Tuesday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

Texas (6-1) held the nation's top offensive team to just two hits and a pair of walks, facing four batters over the minimum.

Freshman right-hander Jason Flores (1-0) set the tone against the Cardinals (7-2), pitching three scoreless frames in his collegiate debut.

Flores went six up and six down before inducing an inning-ending double play to work around a couple of base runners in the third.

Sophomore righty Max Grubbs picked up where Flores left off, twirling three shutdown innings of his own.

Grubbs retired nine of the 10 hitters he faced, striking out four along the way.

Junior right-handed hurler Ruger Riojas posted consecutive 1-2-3 frames, highlighted by two punchouts.

Meanwhile, on his 22^nd birthday, junior righty Connor McCreery capped off the shutout with a scoreless ninth.

As a team, Texas threw 71 of its 99 pitches for strikes, tallying eight strikeouts.

The Longhorns' offense backed the staff from the jump, as freshman third baseman Adrian Rodriguez plated a run with an RBI single in the opening frame.

In the seventh, Texas ballooned its cushion with back-to-back homers from junior catcher Rylan Galvan and sophomore second baseman Ethan Mendoza.

One inning later, sophomores Casey Borba and Tommy Farmer IV both added insurance tallies for the Longhorns, with an RBI triple and double, respectively.

With the victory, Texas extended its winning streak to six games.

Next, the Longhorns hit the road for the Las Vegas Classic. Texas will face Washington, Texas Tech and Illinois during the three-day event. The Longhorns are scheduled to begin play at 8 p.m. CT on Friday.
