Longhorns extend winning streak to 17 games
STARKVILLE, Miss. — In its first-ever Southeastern Conference weekend, the 11th-ranked University of Texas baseball team completed a sweep by beating Mississippi State, 4-1, in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field.
"Today was just a total grind of pitching, defense and timely hits," head coach Jim Schlossnagle said. "I'm just really proud of all of our guys. … It was just a total team effort, which it has to be to pull off something like this. It's very unusual [to sweep] on the road in the SEC."
The victory also marked the Longhorns' 17th victory in a row, their longest winning streak since a 21-game stretch in 2010.
Right-handers Jason Flores (2-0) and Max Grubbs (4) led the way for Texas (17-1, 3-0 SEC), limiting the Bulldogs (13-7, 0-3 SEC) to just one tally on four hits.
Flores tossed 3 2/3 innings of one-run baseball, yielding a pair of hits in his SEC debut. Meanwhile, Grubbs retired seven of the first nine batters he faced, holding Mississippi State scoreless over the last 3 1/3 frames.
Texas wasted very little time leaping ahead in the finale.
Catcher Rylan Galvan crushed a solo shot — his second homer of the weekend — to put the Longhorns up, 1-0, in the second.
The Bulldogs pushed across a tally in the third, but Flores and Grubbs would hold them there.
Texas third baseman Casey Borba lifted the Longhorns back in front with an RBI single in the fourth, chasing Mississippi State Karson Ligon (2-2).
Second baseman Ethan Mendoza provided insurance with a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh, before shortstop Jalin Flores worked a bases-loaded walk to pad the lead.
The Longhorns will look to build to their winning streak on Tuesday, as Texas welcomes UTSA to UFCU Disch-Falk Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
"We're going to play an awesome UTSA team — one of the best hitting and offensive teams in the country," Schlossnagle said. "So, we're going to have our hands full. We're gonna have to throw some guys that didn't pitch this weekend. They're gonna have to help us out in that game. It looks like the weather is gonna be good, so we really need the Longhorn faithful to show up, make a lot of noise and fill every seat."
