Junior Christiaan Maas earned his second career collegiate victory at the Pauma Valley Invitational.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — University of Texas junior Christiaan Maas has been named the Southeastern Conference Men's Co-Golfer of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday. This marks Maas' first career weekly league honor and he is the second Longhorn to earn the accolade this year, as Tommy Morrison previously claimed the award on Feb. 12. Maas shared this week's honor with Auburn's Brendan Valdes.
Maas earned his second collegiate individual victory at the Pauma Valley Invitational (Mar. 17-18), as he carded a 54-hole total of 9-under 204 (68-70-66) to earn a one-shot win over LSU's Algot Kleen at 8-under 205. Maas led the Longhorns to a solid runner-up finish at 17-under 835 (276-286-273) in an elite 15-team field that featured six top-10 teams in the nation.
Starting Tuesday's final round in a tie for fourth and two strokes off the lead, Maas had an outstanding start to his round with birdies on four of his opening five holes (1, 2, 4 and 5) and made the turn at 4-under on the day. He added a birdie on 12 before a bogey on 15 brought him back to 4-under in his round. Maas then made par on 16 and 17 before sinking a long birdie putt on 18 to finish at 5-under 66 on the day and 9-under overall for the tournament.
This marked the second career collegiate win for Maas, as he previously earned medalist honors at the 2024 NCAA Austin Regional. Maas boasts a 69.57 stroke average and has registered four top-five and five top-10 individual finishes in his first seven stroke-play appearances this season. Eighteen of his 21 rounds this year have been par or better, including 11 rounds in the 60s.
Texas, which climbed to No. 2 in the latest Scoreboard powered by Clippd national rankings earlier today, is back on the course when it competes at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational on Mar. 24-25 (Monday-Tuesday) in Palm City, Fla. Maas' win at the Pauma Valley Invitational marked the third-straight tournament for the Longhorns with an individual champion, as Morrison claimed his first collegiate individual title in a playoff at the Amer Ari Invitational (Feb. 6-8) and junior Luke Potter won his first collegiate individual championship at The Hayt (Mar. 9-10).
