Junior Christiaan Maas wins Freddie Tait Cup for the second time as low amateur at the DP World Tour event.
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa — University of Texas Men's Golf junior Christiaan Maas recorded a tie for fourth-place finish at the Investec South African Open Championship on Sunday at Durban Country Club. A native of Pretoria, South Africa, Maas competed as an amateur in the prestigious DP World Tour event.
Maas carded a 54-hole score of 12-under 204 (70-64-70) to finish just two strokes off the individual lead. Sunday's final round was cancelled due to rain and course conditions. Dylan Naidoo and Laurie Canter both concluded the opening 54 holes at 14-under 202, and Naidoo defeated Canter in a playoff on Sunday to earn the victory.
Maas claimed the Freddie Tait Cup as the low amateur at the South African Open Championship. In fact, he was the only amateur in the tournament to make the 36-hole cut. Maas earned the Freddie Tait Cup for the second time, as he previously claimed low amateur honors at the 2022 South African Open.
Maas is currently No. 18 in the latest World Amateur Golf Ranking (Feb. 26) and No. 16 in the most recent NCAA Division I individual rankings by Scoreboard (Feb. 26). A two-time All-American at Texas, he has registered a 69.73 scoring average over the first five stroke-play tournaments for the Longhorns this season. Maas boast two top-five and three top-10 finishes this year. Thirteen of his 15 rounds this season have been par or better, including eight rounds in the 60s.
